Could The O'Brien Cup replace the Stanley Cup once again?

The longer this lockout goes on, the more grumblings we're likely to hear to make that happen - just like in the last lockout.
This is something I've thought about a little bit - I could see the KHL, at some point down the road, pushing to play for the Stanley Cup in an effort to really legitimatize itself as a true professional hockey league.

No way the NHL will lose the cup. I won't argue that it's the best league in the world so I see no reason to make it global.

Same, or at least the idea that he'd do a charity scrimmage for an oversized trophy of some sort.

It is slightly reminiscent of the Memorial Cup.

Got to hand it to the British. They did trophies pretty well back in the day. FA Cup, Stanley Cup.....

The original Stanley Cup was even less impressive looking, its appearance was bulked up... there's no reason the same couldn't be done with a "presentation cup" version of the O'Brien cup.

I think the more times we get labor stoppages like this, and the more anger grows and grows towards the NHL (owners and/or players) for causing it, the more and more people are going to mention that the Stanley Cup does not belong to the NHL, and that they have no inherent right to keep it if it's going to be continually held hostage, and not even awarded as a result.

I think we'd see more legal challenges, and maybe even the Canadian government wading in, depending on how many votes they'd think they could wring out of it.

And if the NHL ever expanded out of North America, I'm pretty sure they'd never want any new "world" trophy to be created and then be above the Stanley Cup. So then the O'Brien Cup would be the most natural trophy to be once again awarded to the champions of the North American version of the NHL.

There's some nice trophies out there but nothing beats the Stanley Cup in terms of badassery.

That's happened once...
