So 11 points in 7 games. Smaller sample size than some of his peers but it means he's off to a better start than basically any other NHLer in Finland.

In comparison
Kyle Turris 16 points in 19 games

Peverley 18 points in 20 games

Stepan 3 points in 9 games

Karlsson 19 points in 23 games (great for a defender, but he's the second coming of Bobby Orr after all)

Nielsen 18 points in 20 games

Bodker 22 points in 22 games

...then there's Barkov with 28 points in 28 games.

Anyway I hate how there's no NHL season when this was our first chance to see what Eller can do after being able to train in the preseason.

it is just not common. Look around the league, try naming other guys, only other guys I can think of are Patrick Sharp, who plays LW only because Hossa and Kane play RW. When one of them is out, Sharp goes back to RW. And in the playoffs, Dustin Brown offered to moved to LW because the Kings couldn't find a LWer during the tradeline.
Kovalchuk and Ovechkin

Gally-Eller-Leblanc
Moen-Prust-Armstrong

This also resolves the 2xRW issue. Personally, I'd switch Bourque and Pacioretty, but since Therrien said the top line will be intact, I'd try this.
Pacioretty-Desharnais-Cole
Bourque-Plekanec-Gionta
Gally-Eller-Armstrong
Moen-Prust-White

Leblanc's not ready yet, he needs to learn to slow down his game offensively in order to find open players and use his hands a little more, and White's gotta be there.

I like the 4th line. It's definitely much better than last year 4th line. Was there a 4th line last year ?

Does anybody still have that website bookmarked that used to estimate how scoring in one league translates to another?

This one?

It's very outdated though, it was written not only before the KHL, but during a low point in Finnish hockey quality. I mean look at the talent coming out of Finland in the mid 00s compared to before and after. Since then SM-liiga has better, the Czech league has collapsed in quality, and the Swiss league has gotten better than the German.

Funny how much can change in 5 or so years. I wish someone would update those numbers.

Thanks!

Bodes well that Eller can dominate the Finnish league. I really think he can surprise a few people this year.

Is it time to try him in an offensive role? I think we might have too many grinders on the team, he's going to play with Moen and Prust probably, bleh.

Remember guys that Eller is more used to international ice than guys like Peverely. However, it is a good sign that he is producing and producing well. We also should remember that he produced pretty well in the summer on a crappy Danish team.

Eller, along with Markov, is a wild card this season.

I'd try him at wing on the PP, but keep him at C for 5v5. His defensive game is just too good to throw out by putting him on the wing full time.

And bump Pleks to the 3rd line? DD to wing?

Eller can not play wing effectively for a long period of time at the NHL level for whatever reason, that's clear after 2 seasons in his career.

We have too many centers when you factor in Gally, it's clear a trade is coming at some point (whenever that may be).

Eller should definitely get some PP time next season (or maybe this season if negotiations go well). I really want to see him an offensive role. I know everyone gets all anal about Desharnais playing wing and taking him off the first line, but I wouldn't mind seeing a top 6 of

Pacioretty Eller Desharnais
Bourque Plekanec Cole

I know that leaves us with no 3rd line centre as well as no one for Gionta to play with, but I really want to see what would happen. Maybe test it out for a game or so. Would be nice to see what we have in Eller.

I wouldn't move any of the centres though. I'd move Desharnais to wing. A centre depth of Plekanec, Galchenyuk and Eller with Desharnais as a back up in case of injuries is pretty strong imo (of course it depends on how Galchenyuk develops). For the first time in a loooooooooooooooooong time, the centre position is not a problem and having a strong centre depth chart is important. Boston has Seguin, Krecji, Bergeron, Peverely and Kelly all as centres and they have done the wise thing it make room for all of them. Of course, unless you get an offer you can't refuse, you move one of them, but I really don't think it's a bad thing.

That's why the second part of my post mentions that he will probably play with two grinders again in Moen and Prust or even Armdog. I don't want to move him to wing at all as he is by far the biggest center we have, but Bergevin should give him better linemates if Eller is ready for a bigger role on the team. With Therrien, we might see the old school Top6-Checking-Grinder lines format which wouldn't take advantage of his offense as much if that's the case instead of a defensively responsible top 9 where all players are counted to score and and adhere to a defensive system in the process.

He definitely should see some PP time this year though, fully agree on that.

Definitely should be on the pp, going to help that Kostitsyn is gone

Yep. I think it may be the smartest move in the long run, but I sincerely doubt MT has the nads to try it. He'd get his Q card revoked by the boys on anti-chambre.

I'm fine with this as well if Leblanc isn't ready for a regular shift.

Lars Eller is underrated. He has what it takes to blossom into a top-tier two-way player à la Tomas Plekanec. A well-rounded player that can be used in any type of situations.

The points will come as he gains confidence. He has the potential to become that big top line center the Habs have been lacking for years. He already has a very strong frame and will become more dominant as he grows and learns how to use it effectively.
