LA, and Phoenix weren't even in a playoff spot around the 48/50 game mark last year. Toronto actually was in our conference, with Washington in like 10th. I've always said if you're in 10th at the deadline which is like 62 games left, your chances are tough. At a 48 game mark though not so much.
We were pretty borderline too, tied for eighth at the All-Star break, I'm sure that was around 47-48 games played too. It is amazing to think how different the playoffs would be if the season got chopped off twenty games.
memory fails me, probably because I was 8, but at what point in the 48 game season did the mark as the trade deadline? Same as it would have been?
April 7th 1995. Season ended first week of May. For the Devils this was right after the 36 game mark, so 3/4ths through the season. Needed wikipedia for that!
Don't think we were active that day though we did pick up Chambers sometime in March I think, and Broten not much earlier. Actually I forget which trade happened first.

Tied with the Leafs haha!
At the trade deadline I'm almost positive Winnipeg was in 8th, or maybe even leading the southeast? The problem there was they had played almost a handful of games more than mostly every other team in the conference. We were still in 6th at the trade deadline I think.
If this past year's team only had 48 games to get its **** together, rest assured that lines like Boulton-Mills-Janssen don't happen. Or last as long as they did.
Forward help would have been brought in a lot sooner than Poni, for sure.
Still not confident at all with Henrique out. I expect Josefson will break out. I'm sure that also means Barch or Janssen nightly until Henrique comes back. With the report of several teams looking to sign Sykie once the lockout ends, going by his interview a couple months ago I'm sure he'll give Lou, and us the first chance to sign him. Unless of course he wants too much money/multi years, etc.

Haha seriously? Man the first name the same, and that weird Czech spelling of Peter. Straka looking close to Sykora, or at least when your eyes are as bad as mine!
It's not Sykora wanting to come back that I doubt, it's Lou throwing him a bone.
Lou has shot himself in the foot before with rewarding loyalty. But, I hope that part of him prevails. Sykora can definitely put up those mintues for a 60ish game season.
If he doesn't get the call from the Devils, someone else will definitely take him though. He said his goal is to stay in the NHL.

Again something you don`t need to know, but...
It`d be more likely to mix them up if you were Czech. Both straka and sykora are birds.
Right now I can't justify not bringing him back unless there is a better option like a trade. It would likely cost us more though than just signing him. With Henrique out I don't feel confident about this team at all, and you know now Barch, or Janssen will be in the lineup ever night, Kovy will be used like Forrest Gump running across country, and CBGB might not be together which we need them to be unless they go flat.
Also Scotty, and whoever else tweeted at Barch must have got through to him. He hasn't posted anything on twitter since November the 10th! Damn you guys!
I said in the Summer if we lose a D man we're fine. We had a big second half, and made it to the SCF without Tallinder who many put very high on the D depth pole.
I also said if we lose a forward not named Barch, or Janssen, we have a REAL BIG problem. That's why one of the D men needs to go. We're fine at D. It's forwards, and scoring where there is a problem.
I'm not really confident in Tedenby or Butler. Both need to be scoring to have any chance. Tedenby really needs to score at a 15 goal clip(Over 82 games) to have a future, and we've all agreed on that it seems. Though as I've said if he racks up points through assists, I'd cut him leeway on the goals.
Not saying I don't think they can't play for us. Just saying I'd feel more confident with Sykora also at this point. They likely would have been on the team anyway.
...is the best combination I can put together until Henrique comes back.
Unless Lou's ready and waiting to pull the trigger on a trade/signing as soon as the lockout is lifted.
At least there's some chemistry among those lines.
