Hey fellas... leaf fan/wjhc guy here.

Wondering what your guys' take on the goalie situation is this year? I think its a no brainer Gibson will be the starter... but what are Sparks' chances? I know all 3 guys will be taken over to Ufa, but only 2 will be rostered and actually dress/play (barring injury)

I pretty much know nothing about Gillies but have followed Sparks pretty closely since he was drafted.

My apologies if this has been brought up earlier...

Not taking anything away from the skill of Gaudreau but a pretty lame ass effort from that defenceman. Yikes.

I think Sparks has the edge as the backup, but that's not saying much as Gibson will be the workhorse (if healthy).

This may have been discussed but what are people thinking for captains? I would have to think Miller will don the C and Trouba will get an A but who will get the other?

As a leaf fan I hope it's Biggs ofc, however I am definitely curious to see who it will be.

To be honest the only player I think who should've gotten an invite is Nieves. Samuelsson would be a decent offensive weapon, but has too many holes in his game currently, I don't think it would've "hurt" USA to invite him, but not surprised from the lack of one as well.

It's a shame Gibson is hurt right now. It would have been a Gibson/Sparks duel last night in Kitchener.

I have never seen Gilles play, but I don't see anyway he could match Sparks right now. He seems locked in at the moment.

Yeah, Gillies and his 1.88 GAA and .930 SV % in the NCAA probably couldn't compare to Sparks. Gillies is a fantastic goaltender, especially when you factor in the agility he has for a guy already his size. Imo Gillies makes that team way before Sparks, but I don't think either of them will surpass Gibson.

Tough to compare Sparks #'s in the OHL vs. Gillies in the NCAA.

@ Providence College he hasn't exactly played against the stiffest competition so far. Sparks is also playing for a mediocre OHL team and standing on his head, even though his numbers aren't nearly as good.

Mind you like I said, I haven't seen Gillies play.

The offence is not mediocre, the defence leaves something to be desired sometimes, still a good team.

I really like Gillies but I believe sparks is a year older so I think he most likely makes it.

This.

Nieves is doing really well in his rookie year.

Well like I said, his play right now. Since the beginning of November Sparks' stats match that of Gilles. A 1.94 GAA and a .940 SV% in 14 games.

Yes but you originally said Gillies couldn't match his play (which is most likely what Gary was referring to) and as you just said he does.

All three goalies will make it as the IIHF instituted a recent change to allow teams to bring three goalies. Only two will dress.

The exact same thing can be said of Gillies. The Friars are not a great team, but he is giving them a chance every game, thus all the recognition he is getting.

I guess I should have been a little bit clearer. Providence strength of schedule is quite a bit easier than the Guelph Storm's. The amount of high level prospects etc. isn't comparable. I think they're both playing on middle of the road teams in their respective leagues, just that Sparks is facing elite level shooters every night, where as Gillies isn't seeing the same level of talent vs. schools like Sacred Heart, Merrimack, Quinnipiac etc.
