That's certainly debatable, but he likely wouldn't be available anyways. NJ has Marty/Hedberg signed for next year, and making a Hedberg/Bernier swap as Marty's backup just doesn't seem like something they're going to do.
I get the idea of reinforcing the area... but as of right now, those positions aren't available, so any projects you acquire will likely block others to a certain extent.
Perhaps its a trade that would be better suited for next year if Penner and Gagne aren't re upped. That is a risk of blocking our up and comers but other than Toffoli I'm not sure if we have much else out on the wings with top 6 ability.
Sure why not, have you got any other "backups" on slightly longer contracts though, we might want someone to carry on after Quick (he's only signed for 10yrs)
I'm a Carpenter by trade not an author, I was pointing out that you got the wrong end of the stick about what i meant.
Bernier did not split 50/50 with Quick or an aging netminder.
Bernier needs to get a higher workload to improve and he would benefit the team his is traded to most being in a situation where he is battling it out with another young netminder (like he did with Quick) or splitting time with an old guy. better?
Alright, hey there is nothing wrong with but I just found it a bit confusing to read the first time around. That was much clearer and concise. Yes, much better and I do agree with you.

Tanner Pearson and Nikolay Prokhorkin both project to top 6 players on the wings.
Yet again, slightly tweeked my original offer so it may somewhat benefit the needs of L.A. Understand however I refuse to give up Frattin due to his needed type of play to our team as well as our first ( could be our #1 center) so here is my original offer.
Mac, Scrivens and a 2nd for Bernier and a 3rd.
My new offer:
Scrivens, Kulemin.
for
Bernier and 3rd.
I am sorry but Bernier for Kulemin straight up seems a little harsh of a pill to swallow for a goalie who may end up being just another Reimer. I understand you will need a goalie so I send Scrivens back your way and a third round pick comes to the leafs.

I don't really need Scrivens so no But i do like Kulemin more then mac so improved there. I don't like the thought of trading a possible one year wonder player for a starting one goalie for the next 10 years. So i'll counter with
Bernier for Kulemin 2nd and 3rd in 13
Varlamov was in the same draft class, also a first round pick. He had accomplished more at an NHL level at the time of his trade.
If his trade value was consistant with what GM's still think, we can conclude that Bernier is worth less than a 1st + 2nd at whatever position Colorado expected to pick.

No way do you part with Nikolai Kulemin for Jonathan Bernier.
It's a backwards step in addressing our major lack of size / puck posession up front.

It all depends on who else is available and individual teams needs and preferences of course, You might find that no gm thinks he's worth more than a 2nd.

Porky is stuck in Russia for the next three years I thought (could be wrong) I forgot about Pearson though.

im not sure on stuck or not or length of his khl contract I was just stating he was projected to be top 6
Mcneill and Morin from Chicago? Mcneill might be able to replace Stoll long term if they don't roll Kopitar-Carter-Richards down the middle. Bernier fills a big need in chicago if he can reach his potential, some stability in net.

well i do like morin i don't want or need Mcneill No offense to his talent level but the kings have alot of centers and don't need any more. Kopitar Richards carter Stoll frazer lewis king nolon richardson are all natural centers and thats not includeing toffoli and lokti plus who ever else im forgetting in the ahl that are natural centers. Also I would be very nervous adding the last peice to the hawks who are in the same confense as la. I would be very surprized to see a deal between the two clubs.
Heres something to ponder for leaf fans that say bernier is a sideways move to reimer. I was looking at the ahl goalies and noticed 3 of the top 4 goalies in gaa are former king goalies. ( brust talyor and zatkoff (( Robin Lehner the only non king)) ) This leads me to think the kings are doing something right delevoping there own goalies. Also quick is another homegrown goalie. Now im not a total leaf fan but the last home grown goalie i can remember for the leaf was potvin ( if im wrong sorry ) i would think right now the leafs would rather trust another teams developed goalie (bernier) over there own reimer.

Or perhaps those

have picked up their play due to their news teams respective trainer. You went from a lateral trade to a lateral arguement, at best.
No interest in taking Riemer back He makes to much money and his neck issues. Not the right fit for us. MacArther isnt a right fit for the la so no real interest there. Frattin and a top 9 protected frist would be the counter to this to me.
The kings also have no interest in colborne again no offense to talent level we have more then enuff centers already Ie kopitar richards stoll fraser playing the 4 spots now also have carter nolon king lewis richardson ( all natural centers)on the roster plus toffoli and loktionov and others in the minors Please no more centers in offers we have enuff now.
Yeah, sure. No problem. The reason for Quick, is Quick. I am not subtracting anything from your goalie development specialists, but Quick plays a style that can't be taught, it just comes naturally.

My point is simple the kings have develolped more players and goalies then the leafs. Therefore i would say there a better then average chance Bernier will delvelope into nhl starter The leafs for years havent delveloped a goalie and i dont think reimer will change that. As for your point of his natural ability every goalie has natural ability when there drafted its thru coaching he developes that talent. My point is kings have a history developing players now the leafs dont.
I would personally pay more to keep him outta Toronto
Enroth+Gerbe, how bout it?
No i think Gerbe is to small to play la style hockey No offense to his talent level just to small to be the right fit. I dont think sutter would play him. Id counter with marcus foligno and a frist
To answer the question of why we need a decent first rounder...it's for the same purpose we used 3 of the last 4 picks for.
To trade away either in the offseason or deadline to get the one impact player we happen to be missing. Last season we had to overstock the NHL team because Penner and Gagne were hurt...Lombardi went out and got Carter. That move saved the season along with the hiring of Darryl Sutter. Before that we traded a first for Mike Richards and before that we traded for Dustin Penner.
A first rounder simply is more flexible in value than a single position player in Bernier come trade deadline.
