He's doing a 30 minute interview on the Wyshynski podcast right now. http://www.sportsnet.ca/podcast/mare...p%20RSS-Images

You can listen to it live, it should be available on demand in a couple of hours as well

Here's an excerpt link from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Crossing-Line-...der_B00851M41Y

PS With apologies to the art dept., not a great cover. But Derek striking a Catholic schoolboy pose with ciggie affixed?

Priceless.

Remembering Fred Cusick

And while we're on about Derek, let's remember a true great of Boston sports media.

Some of my fondest B's memories date from the mid to late '80s (I didn't arrive until '82) with Fred calling the games, and Derek providing colour. Good times, no?

There's actually a better one, likely the Canadian version.

In his first Boston-area event, Derek Sanderson will grace New England Mobile Book Fair with a talk about his life and his book. You, his fans, will have an opportunity to ask questions, and of course, the event will conclude with a signing.

82-84 Needham Street, Newton Highlands

One night Dave Shea said something and DS snapped - "Listen fatso you can't even skate so let me criticize not you."

DS always did the 'Keys to the game' with Fred. In 1990 before Game 7 with the Whalers Fred asked him what was the key to the game - DS replied "Score more goals than Hartford."

I picked this book up a week and a half ago. So far the book has been hilarious to read; the story of Sanderson and a fellow Bruin chasing a montreal fan out of the stadium and down the street in Montreal had me laughing aloud in public. I highly recommend everybody get this book if they can.

Thanks for the brief assessment. The first excerpt, included in this thread, promised a good read, and, typically, an honest one.

Hooray for Derek!

Well, no point in letting facts ruin a good story!

True, but there always seems to be enough eye witnesses to remind you for years to come what happened, mostly acquaintances. Half of my antics are pieced together this way.

I've heard Turk tell this story, so I won't spoil it for anyone, but is the "sold his cup ring" story in the book?

After Sanderson went to the Rangers I remember a between periods interview with Bill Chadwick and he's chainsmoking cigarettes. I remember thinking even back then 'Holy ****'. Derek was a different cat.

Read it in a couple days, loved it, fave story:

Playing the Habs (or rangers, can't remember) he smacks a guy in the lips and says "that's for nothing, now just wait till you actually do something.." Jeez I laughed

I remember that one

I also remember a playoff game vs Montreal and the camera focused on Patrick Roy. Derek says "And there's Patrick Ru-wah. Should be Roy (as in Roy Rogers). But it's Ru-wah."

I also remember when he came back from the WHA and John Pierson was interviewing someone between periods. Derek just comes on the set in street clothes (he was inactive, apparently), sits down next down to both of them (chain smoking, of course) and starts with funny faces and antics while poor Pierson is trying to conduct the interview. I was about 9 years old at the time and I thought he was insane.

He was a gem.

Apologies if this has been posted.

Ed Burns (director/star, "The Brothers McMullen," et. al.) is set to play Derek in "Turk," directed by Doug Atchison.

Oh, by then Derek had cleaned up. ABC can let awful Dian Sawyer evidently have a pop or three on election night 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dh1jsAzaPU

and CNN may have let Anderson Cooper do the same

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dh1jsAzaPU

but I'm pretty sure the unhappy stuff was well in the past by the late 80s, and that TV38 ("Ask The Manager"!) had higher standards than the news outlets referenced above.

Burns is going to play Derek's father. Derek's part has not been cast

http://www.deadline.com/2012/11/ed-b...ey-movie-turk/

I like Colin Farrell as Derek. Bobby Orr? Hmmmm.... that's a tough one.

Sadly there are a lot of players like this from the 70's and 80's and players now play in a different cash flow then the previous generations. I lived in Vancouver for many years and came across some former players who were broke and busted in all sense of the words
