Wings' spare parts for defense

Detroit would like to improve the defense. Detroit has 17 NHL-ready forwards signed, and is going to be getting rid of likely two of them. What would be the value for two of Detroit's depth forwards (Abdelkader, Miller, Emmerton, Mursak, Eaves) plus a defensemen (White, Quincey, Kindl, Colaiacovo) in a trade to add a top-four (preferably top-two) defensive defenseman?

White, Quincey and Kindl should all play a big role with the club. There really isn't much point of adding through subtraction. I believe you already have a top two defensive defenseman with Kronwall, so IMO it's adding a number one D-man or bust from Detroit's perspective.

I'd do Ballard for Abdelkader straight up. Based on how the Wings organization has successfully turned around the dying careers of other players in the past, it could be a good deal for both teams.

I think Ballard would be a good fit in Detroit.

I like Ballard, I'm a booster of his, but he won't get a chance here with AV. If Detroit would like him, not for free of course, I'm open to a trade involving him for something around Abdelkader. A conditional second based on games played or on Detroit making the second round of the playoffs or something?

If not, meh, we can afford him as a fifth defender this year, and between him, Edler and Garrison, we're set in our bottom 4 in terms of talent before even mentioning Tanev or our prospects taking a step forward.

Wings get hosed considering Quincey's stats are nearly identical to Bouwmeester's.

I don't think it's that far off, as an outsider anyway. Bouwmeester, for all the crap he gets with that contract, has been the first defenseman the Flames have had in the last few years that had me legitimately worried about getting only crap scoring chances. Quincey isn't even in the same conversation, but Frk and a 1st for Nemisz is a little more then the difference between the two defenders. Calgary adds a little IMO, but J-Bo would be the best quality defender available that wouldn't cost an arm, a leg and Frk and that 1st.

I'd rather move Edler for Abdelkader. Edler would be worth more if he was signed.

Which stats? offensive?

Bouwmeester's been playing in a defensive role in Calgary; Quincey's been allowed to play as an offensive defenseman/PP specialist in both LA and Colorado. I'd do that deal instantly.

I'd do that...

So far, with those two deals, we've got a defense corps that looks something like this:

Kronwall/White
Edler/Bouwmeester
Smith/Ericsson
Kindl

Works for me.

Don't see the Wings taking on Ballard if for no other reason than it helps the Canucks lock up the guy the Wings are truly interested in. The Wings want Edler, the scouting staff was very high on him going into the draft, we know they like him. Why would they help them make sure he never sees the market.

Also the Wings value picks a little more these days. I have my doubts they will truly include that 1st pick for JayBo. They might give you Frk or the 1st but probably not both. Of course we have gone back and forth on that trade for months, it is pretty clear both fanbases hate the value each wants included. I don't know what the price would be, but I am fairly certain we know where it is going on this board and that hasn't been a pretty place in the past.

I would hope you would do that Vancouver certainly won't. But these moves basically mean goodbye to Howard and Filppula in the offseason.

In another thread Douglas Murray for Abdelkader was suggested. I think that sounds like a solid deal. Detroit gains a rugged defenseman and San Jose strengthens their weak bottom 6.

Maybe not a first round pick, but sure.

Value is there in terms of the quality of players, but being that Murray will be a UFA and that Abby just signed a solid deal at low cap hit, I don't think it works. If Murray wasn't a UFA I'd probably be in.

Howard would be priority 1, and the cheapest piece. It might mean keeping only one of Filppula or Edler, but not losing both.

Kaberle's a PMD but he's not really an upgrade on White/Smith/Quincey/Kindl. Five years ago, sure. Now, not so much.

Calgary doesn't take much less, otherwise there's no point in moving him. If the wings want to keep there 1st, they'll have to upgrade the prospect. JayBo for Quincey+Sproul

I actually might be more interested in this than Quincey/1st/Frk.

Simply because getting JBo in this deal would give the Wings this defense:

Kronwall/White
JBo/Smith
Kindl/Ericsson
Colaiacovo

Kronwall is the only guy on that unit who is 30+. Upgrading Quincey to Jbo might be worth losing Sproul instead of the 1st, as the 1st could potentially be a better player anyway.
