Ballard dropping the mitts with Bertuzzi last season is enough toughness for me.

I don't think Ballard avoids the hits because he isn't tough, he avoids them so he can try and use his skill set (skating) to make the play.

Kthsn's analysis makes the most sense here.

Ballard shouldn't be taking a pounding to be effective in the d-zone. He's not a big man and would open himself up to injuries. He needs to utilize his speed and make his first pass a good one. Also, I think he would should be partnered with a rugged dman, such as Garrison and be given the freedom to use his speed. Put Tanev with Edler.

Yep. To hear other posters describe it, Keith Ballard's biggest problem is that he is not Andrew Alberts or Aaron Rome.

Ballard is the toughest and grittiest player on our team at the moment. The guy has a heavy mean streak.

Kassian is just a nut job, and I say that with all due respect (big supporter).

That Bertuzzi incident sticks out for me as well. Ballard plays the game hard, which is more than you can say for some of the other guys on the team.

The other Ballard incident that sticks out in my mind is where he fought Perry.

Just two cheap ***** landing escalating cheap stick work until it finally resulted in an altercation.

I remember on June 2010, I defended Ballard as I thought he was going to be our next Jovo. That's actually what caught me to join this site instead of CDC. That hasn't exactly turned out roses, but I think he still has that, but not for our system. Though, I do think he was our best defender last playoffs outside of Bieksa.
