Is this what the last few days of a lockout looks like?

Are the remaining issues worth losing a season for?

Deal will be made by weekend? Seems likely.

The NHL is giving the players the most of what they want in the make-whole, right?

The NHLPA is balking at a 10 year CBA? WHY?!

How is this a dark day? It sounds like they agree on everything. This is absurd.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie I can tell you there's a hugely negative vibe emanating from both sides right now. Keeping this process on rails today will be challenging.

Absolutely unbelievable.

I feel like i'm getting trolled. If they got this far and end up stalling out and season canceled, I just don't even...

I understand it has been agreed to. But both sides have to look at it as an entire package--and for the NHLPA, having agreed already to a 50/50 split makes it much harder to swallow a contract length cap.

I don't agree.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds to me that what you are implying is that since top players used to get 10 year deals, and average players would get 4-5 year deals, and bottom players got 1-2 year deals...

... that since we are shortening the max deal to 5 years, that means average players will get 3 year deals and bottom players will get 1 year deals, and that will be the "trickle down effect" you are talking about.

I don't agree with that. I think the top players will get the 5 year deals and the average won't suffer shorter length deals at all, on average.
I think they will. Every contract that's signed is in some way relative to past contracts that are signed. What you wrote is indeed what I'm suggesting. Top players will get five year deals. Lesser players are going to have to have to settle for less--GMs will take the approach that, "Player X is great and he got five years, there's no way we're giving you the same." Some lesser players may see longer-term deals still but on average you'll see less and less.

It's just my opinion though, so we'll have to wait and see.

Quote:
The players who currently get over 5 year deals are the vast minority.

Unless you believe that a trickle-down effect will occur on contract lengths for everyone, and I don't, there's really no effect for most of the players.

Guys like Del Zotto or whoever were only gonna get like 4-5 year deals anyway. All this does is bump the Brad Richards types into the 5 year range too.
Yep that's what I believe.

Yeah, I don't get it. Do they really want to do this again 5 years from now? Are they that afraid that they're getting a bad deal? More than any other sport, the NHL needs labor peace for as long as it can get it. Take the 10 year CBA with option at 8 years.

If both sides let these remaining issues torpedo the season they both deserve what they get.

My guess: Both sides are posturing to see who can get the last few scraps.

“@DarrenDreger: A few of the owners pushed hard yest to boost Make Whole to $300 mil to close deal. It wasn't received well which infuriated owners.”

“@DarrenDreger: 4 on 4 mtng last night was brief. PA did not like that dynamic, hence the players insistance on an open room today.”

@cotsonika: Players have gotten owners to back off on a lot if things. Danger is ticking off guys who came to make a deal.

What's next if this happens?

Then it's not really "make it or break it" is it? It's "don't break it" cuz each day sure as hell isn't "making it"

Check and mate

I've heard "make or break" so many times in the past month. Hyperbole to the max.
