It's not just cap circumvention at stake, it's also teams having to offer extra years for players they know won't compete at the end of the contract because the extra years is what gets them to sign.
"We'll deal with it later". Owners would rather it be prohibited under the CBA and not have to deal with it at all
But again, if an owner knows he will still be paying (and have a cap hit) of 5M or 6M per year for the final 3 or 4 years of a 12 year deal on an aging, fading star...and he still wants to offer that contract knowing full well he's going to hamstring his team down the road, that's just his stupidity, no? Why should the players have to protect the owners from themselves if they can't set a term/salary they are comfortable with and stick to it?

Can confirm that NHLPA has indeed requested the return of Federal Mediators to the process.Needless to say,NHL has yet to agree.
Yeah, I have no issue with the players putting up a fight against term limits.
I just have issue with the suggestion that owners have the power to control contract lengths. It's spitting in the face of basic economics.
Sather seemed to work the old cba and used the rules. He'll do the same next time. I have a hard time believing a gm can't build a team without being victimized by the market. LA is another example.

At this stage, doesn't appear the Union will take this present NHL offer to a full vote.PA still actively engaged in internal meetings #TSN
That was from 2 hours ago. It almost sounded like they were close to a vote....and now they want mediators involved. You have got to be kidding me. That won't fly with Bettman.

this is absolutely ridiculous
Truly absurd.

NHL firm stance on 5 yr term limit reflects ownership belief that long term deals on books are liability regarding franchise sales

#cba Talks resume with Big 4; morning update: http://*******/SAWW9D
Tim Panaccio @tpanotchCSN
when talks resume around noon, you can expect The Big 4 together as we're back to full negotiation parties
The big 4 apparently met briefly last night. This doesn't look good.

Talk about picking and choosing your battles. The Fehr's really just don't care, they want to win. We knew this all along but when you get this close, don't make stupid moves.

Sather also absolutely had reduced offer sheet risk. Both because he didn't hand them out and because lots of players want to stay in NY.

Current situation is NHL players do want mediators to re-enter talks to end NHL Lockout, source says. More in @SBJSBD Closing Bell
Retweeted by Tim Panaccio
Nothing new really, just another tweet. I guess they feel it's close enough to getting done and maybe mediators can push it to the "closing bell"
“@KatieStrangESPN: #CBA Apparently, possibility of mediation first broached Tuesday during discussions. Both sides open to idea, but availability was an issue”
If the teams put a donation cup near the entrance turnstiles, with the proceeds being evenly split between the PA and owners, is anyone else willing to throw in a few coins?
Because the owners have large chains & padlocks and can stop paying them for entire seasons at a time
I guess. But if they'd really rather make no money because they can't prevent themselves from paying stupid amounts of money, maybe they should just cancel the season.
“@Real_ESPNLeBrun: I don't believe NHL will decide on NHLPA request for mediation until after both sides meet today. And even then, not sure NHL is keen on it”
