Habsfan18's "Taking a look back" (January 1980 edition)

Well, some of you may be familiar with these threads that I used to create. It's been over 2 years, and my collection has grown significantly since then, so I figured now would be a good time to start them up again. I will be adding 1958-1959 through 1975-1976 to my collection soon, so look for editions to cover many of those years over the next few weeks.

Here are previous installments:

- Mike Palmateer of the Leafs is on the cover of the issue. A blurb reads "Boasting Leaf backs up words."

- The Soviet Red Army wins the first 2 games of their tour of NHL cities, defeating the New York Islanders (3-2) and New York Rangers (5-2). Moscow Dynamo didn't fare as well, losing 6-2 to the Vancouver Canucks, in a game in which rookie Brad Smith scored twice.

- Cover story features Mike Palmateer of the Toronto Maple Leafs. After the Leafs and Palmateer were blasted 10-0 by the Boston Bruins at the Garden, Mike had this to say: "I realize that it takes a truck-load of guts to say this but I played great. I made some great stops and I never quit. I was hoping to get more breakaways so I could stop 'em. If anyone from a team interested is in giving me a job was watching, they saw plenty, didn't they? Even though the score was ten-ip, they saw what I could do." Palmateer and the Leafs are in an ongoing battle over contract issues. He feels he's one of the best goalies in the league, and would like $200,000 per season on a new deal.

- Vancouver and Edmonton are both hoping to win the rights to host the upcoming Canada Cup.

- Ken McKenzie reveals that Scotty Bowman, who is doing a terrific job in Buffalo, still wishes Sam Pollock had explained to him why he wasn't qualified to be GM in Montreal. Insiders say Bowman would have stayed in Montreal for $100,000 a year less than what he's currently making in Buffalo.

- Recently Brian O'Neill, NHL Executive Vice President, telexed some disciplinary action to the Los Angeles Kings. In the telex he misspelled the word precipitate. George Maguire, the Kings GM, responds with a letter which ended with "P.S. - Learn to spell!"

- The Habs are finally happy with the play of Pierre Larouche, after two disappointing seasons.

- Johnny Wilson, coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins says Marcel Dionne is the best player in hockey right now. Dionne is having his best season ever.

- Borje Salming and his lawyers are asking for $400,000 per season from the Maple Leafs.

- The Jacobs Brothers, are rumored to be trying to sell the Boston Bruins. Bobby Orr is said to be part of a syndicate interested in acquiring the club.

- Defense..what was thought to be the Whalers strongest suit at the beginning of the season has now become a worrisome problem just past the quarter pole. Mark Howe, Rick Ley, Gordie Roberts and Al Sims were to anchor the defense with some help from Alan Hangsleben and Chuck Luksa. Mark Howe was moved up to flank Mike Rogers with father Gordie playing on the fight side. After that, injuries on the back end started piling up.

- The Philadelphia Flyers are currently sitting at a record of 23-0-10. Goaltender Phil Myre considers it the greatest accomplishment he's ever been a part of.

- Scotty Bowman, coach and GM of the Sabres, skips out on his first trip back to Montreal. His reason: A scouting trip. Roger Neilson takes over for the trip.

- The most recent bombshell out of the Toronto Maple Leafs dressing room was the resignation of Darryl Sittler as captain. Sittler didn't consult management before making a public announcement.

- Bill Torrey, GM of the Islanders, says the NHL has the talent and hockey knowledge, "but unless we make some drastic changes in our approach, we're just going to fall farther behind the Soviets."

- In this weeks "Meet the Rookie" Washington's Bengt Gustafsson is featured. He is believed to be a big part of the teams future.

- The brand new Joe Louis Arena in Detroit is earning rave reviews. Dale McCourt figures to be one of the bright young stars who will be filling the arena for years to come.

- Flames rookie defenseman Paul Reinhart has been satisfied by his defensive play, aided by Phil Russell. Reinhart currently 3rd in rookie scoring with 4 goals and 14 assists through 28 games.

- Habs defenseman Gilles Lupien is unhappy with his ice time. Claude Ruel advised Lupien during practice that it will stay that way unless he changed his attitude. The discussion turned into a shouting match which ended when Ruel invited Lupien into a company office with Irving Grundman inside. Gilles decided against showing up.

- The Toronto Maple Leafs trade Lanny McDonald, and Joel Quenneville to the Colorado Rockies for Pat Hickey and Wolf Paiement. The Leafs players, fans, and Paiement are among those furious over the trade.

- Guy Lafleur of the Montreal Canadiens recently nets his 1,000 career point - a goal in a 7-3 loss to the Islanders.

- Edmonton's Dave Dryden announces his retirement from hockey. He would rather teach younger goaltenders, instead of playing.

- AHL star Reg Thomas, who was recently acquired from the Leafs, has become an instant hit in Quebec - scoring at a goal per game pace.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hop you enjoy!

These are always great, but my favourites are always the draft issues.

Looking forward to it. I remember the hockey news so well from those days. I was only 11 in 1958 but either I or my older brother would buy it every week. Whatever weeks you pick, I would like to see the following-anything on the pappyline, player of the week, leading scorers at that point. As I remember it they also had a page or 2 on the minor leagues-AHL, WHL, OHA, QSHL. Would be interested in excerpts from those pages including leading scorers.

You have compiled a great resource here which could be of great interest to hockey historians.
