Come on dude you can't hold anything against Kovy for leaving Atlanta to go to the Devils(Or Kings the other team in the running) Would you blame Parise, and Suter for going from perennial contenders, to a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 5 years? What players have stayed with the same team? Brodeur, Alfie, Iginla(Was originally drafted by Dallas though right?) Doan, Elias, even Teemu has been around a bit.
If you ask many diehard Thrashers fans they'll tell you they don't begrudge Kovy for leaving and in fact were encouraged that he was finally going to play on a competitive team. He left what was very obviously a sinking ship (due to ASG) to go somewhere he'd have a real shot at winning. He could have made more money elsewhere, but he sacrificed some $$$ for a chance at a Cup (yes I understand it's still a lot of money but he's worth it).
I'll be honest, I had some preconceived ideas of Kovys attitude and work ethic before he got here. They weren't good. He's completely turned that around for me. He's a class act on and off the ice, is a great teammate, and has embraced change, possibly sacrificing offense, to become a more well-rounded player.
I don't have anything against Alfredsson, but I'm a Devils fan so of course I'm going to vote Kovy. I understand Sens fans voting for their captain as well. What I don't understand is why anyone would really hate either player...
Alfredsson is probably going to win this poll because the only people voting Kovy are the ones that love him, while the people voting Alfredsson are Alfredsson lovers but also Kovy haters.
Too many people hate Kovy because of the contract he signed and drama surrounding his free agency, even though none of that was really his fault.

I don't have Kovalchuk at all, he's a fine player and I'd love to have him on the Senators (contract aside of course), but I prefer the hometown guy in this instance. Now, if Alfredsson were against Selanne or so on, that would be much tougher.

Which would make sense in a poll about who you like more. Even you, a Kovy lover, admits that he is not as well liked.

You know that Spezza's cap hit is higher than Kovalchuk's?
I like Kovalchuk, but for the purpose of this poll, he once stole candy from a baby and, one time, I'm pretty sure he called someone a name on the ice.

You know Kovalchuck is signed until hes 42, right?
Actually until he is forty.
And his play lends itself to still being effective at later ages. Even if his skating or body wears down, he'll always have his shot and his stick handling. Same reason why Sykora whose vastly worse then he was in his best days with NJ, still was able to put up 20-20 with NJ.
Selanne's 42 and still putting up big points. No reason Kovy can't when he gets older.

Every players different. Why take the chance that he regresses? He could pull a Gomez and you got a 6.6mil cap hit for the next 11 years for a 40 points player.
Or maybe in 6 years the age really does affect him which makes him an average 2nd liner and then 2 seasons later he barely a 3rd liner. Guess what? you got that 6.6mil cap hit for another 3 seasons.
