As Bobby Mack and Aaron Ward put it, now its about what each side feels is worth losing a season over.

Not as the man who made very rich people into richer people.
This is wrong on many levels. Your scepticism of Fehr is silly and unfounded.

He already has a reputation that needs no bolstering.

You have no idea what his personal intentions are. MAYBE, he came out of retirement because he is a very competitive person who misses a good battle. You do not get that successfull in such a combative venue without being a Type A personality. MAYBE it is to make more dough. MAYBE it is to further his legacy.
MAYBE it is simply because he was hired to do so.

Certainly, he is very confident in his abilities and feels that he can be of assistance to his clients. Remember, the clients retained him to assist them. They felt that he was the guy to best protect their interests.

He has a fiduciary responsibility to his clients to look out for their best interests. This includes reviewing proposals and ultimately, the new collective bargaining agreement. It includes providing his legal opinion as to all matters and allow the players to make a fully educated decision. In fact, if he did not do so, he would absolutely be commiting legal malpractice.

Ultimately, the players remain his boss. He answers to them. They can vote to dismiss him any time they desire.

This is a negotiation. It is a large and extremely complex contract. There are different ways to go about skinning the cat and ultimately, allowing other voices in the room to be heard is one possible means of whiddling down issues, pressing positions of strength and giving on positions of weakness.

I think the 5 year length on UFA contracts and the length of the CBA are really all that is left. The 5 year contract length obviously favors the owners but at the same time it's one of those things that can be positive and negative for both sides. Same with the length of the CBA. When you have a sense of uncertainty from both sides on the same topic in discussions like this you get a lot of ***** footing.

I think a deal can be reached within a week and I would love if it is. But I still think this goes on until the end of the month.

Many players here don't like what's on table - "what's in it for us" mantra - but many others not here say this could be a workable deal.
This should get very interesting from the players side.

McKenzie is saying some owners feel this blows up today, others see it as almost done.

So basically, we still know nothing.

The proposal of a 5 year max (7 years for own UFAs) with a 5% variance but dropping other contracting issues is an interesting dilemma for the NHLPA. That makes the contract rights issue really only about the big ticket guys. The majority of players don't get 5 year plus deals nor have huge front loaded contracts.

Interested to hear Miller's take on this since it would reduce the amount of money tied up by the big ticket guys thus protecting the "middle class" of players he said he was concerned about.

Similar rumors were swirling about coaches calling players Tuesday telling them to get ready.

Just rumors.

It's confirmed that the PA has requested the federal mediators to come back. NHL has not yet agreed.

Sounds like things are falling apart again, although the afternoon session just started. So let's see.

LeBrun's tweets are annoying as heck right now.

Fehr feels both sides should be able to reach a deal given what players have come back with. Feels there's a complete agreement on "dollars"

Fehr says he believes there's agreement on pension issue

So what the HECK is holding things up?

We'll see.

I think Bettman comes back with "We're closer, but still very far apart on critical core issues."

And around and around it'll go.

Ka-boom.

Done.

LeBrun:

Fehr says NHL left a voicemail message saying NHLPA counter wasn't acceptable. No need to stick around today or Friday. Talks broken for now

Fehr says right now it doesn't appear labor impasse will be resolved soon

So, long story short, it's not good. Talks have broken off and who knows where the hell this goes now

Funny that the PA conveniently did their presser before receiving the NHL voicemail, yet all the players stayed around after Fehr was done.
It's like they knew the NHL had rejected the proposal or something (probably because they did)..

Another pitiful act from spinmaster Igor.

Edit:
Quote:
ChrisBottaNHL Got no problem with NHL's quick rejection. Fehr and the PA tried to lay it on thick. Desperation was sad. It failed.
