What about Bouwmeester is hard-hitting? His pay grade?

Phaneuf and its actually not even close when you take into account Phaneuf's offensive production and better salary cap despite his pylon moments on D

As much as it pains me to say, Phaneuf.

It depends on the needs of the team.

I’m a Bruins fan and Dion Phaneuf on the Bruins would bring a redundant skill set. Chara is better plus Johnny Boychuk and Adam McQuaid bring toughness. Phaneuf wouldn’t be the number one defenceman so would play less offensive TOI and put up fewer points.

A guy like Jay Bouwmester could eat up big minutes for the Bruins, enable the Bruins to use the Chara – Seidenberg pairing all the time and bring elite skating to our defence that we lack.

Phaneuf is probably ‘better’, but he isn’t a better fit for every team.

I take Bouw, but its close. Mostly based on needs of team rather than overall quality of player.

"The guy with more points is better, even though he's terrible defensively."

Phaneuf isn't Wayne Gretzky. His offense does not make up for his lack of defense.

Bouwmeester may not have the overall numbers, but it's important to note that Phaneuf finished with 21 ESP to Bouwmeester's 19. Bouwmeester played more than a minute less per-game on the PP, while playing almost a minute more on the PK.

Conclusion: We're talking about one guy who is used primarily for his offensive abilities, and another who is used primarily for his defensive abilities.

So given that conclusion, why would you exclude Phaneuf's defensive lapses from discussion unless you favored Phaneuf over Bouwmeester without having logically processed it.

You forgot "play defense" in your description of Bouwmeester. Something Phaneuf is lacking.

I wouldn't want either but since you've got a gun to my head, Phaneuf.

Who would I want? Hmm.

Both might disrupt the team chemistry... a little. I know Bieksa doesn't like Bouwmeester. But he hasn't been that open about it.

(WARNING: long winded post that you may not find interesting)

The Canucks used to really get annoyed with Phaneuf though. Henrik doesn't show a lot of emotion, but I remember one time when he scored, he went straight up to Phaneuf and started trash talking him. Phaneuf glared at him. I remember because on the next coach's corner, Don Cherry was going on about how Hank was ****ed because he's seen those eyes before. But really, Phaneuf was ****ed. He got traded.

A lot of our players were saying Calgary won that deal. I remember Henrik saying Calgary is going to be a scary team now. Lol. Nice prediction Hank. I think they were all bsing because they hated Phaneuf. Luongo even said something along those lines. About how the Canucks were not going to have to deal with him any more... that's why everyone on the Canucks liked the trade.

So Phaneuf on the Canucks might not be a good idea.

Bieksa just didn't like Bouwmeester because he used to get so much hype while he got shat on by everyone (Canucks fans, trade rumours, etc.) for producing similar numbers.

Y'know, when you make statements like that, flying in the face of facts and statistics, it really makes you look dumb.

Unfortunately, we've been down this path before, and no matter what I do to point out that Phaneuf played great defensively last season, you stick your fingers in your ears and scream "LA LA LA LA". If you're going to make statements like that at least be able to back them up man.

Phaneuf. Bouwmeester looks like a fish out of water in a high pressure market.

I'll say it again. If you think CORSI proves who is better than who, then Ian White is better than Phaneuf.

And CORSI also says that Anze Kopitar, Joe Thornton, and Pavel Datsyuk are the best forwards in the league. Chara should have won the Norris, with Lidstrom and Boychuk as the other finalists.

What do you think of those selections?

Dion. Bouwmeester is very disappointing, so many tools (speed, strenght, size, skill) yet such underwhelming and boring results. The Dion at least is spectacular (wether it be good or bad, but on average its more good and definitely better than Bouwmeester)
