That's a disappointing surprise as far as Bystrom is concerned...

Is stransky too old to play in wjc or was he just left off roster by coaches, seems very unlikely that he would've been kept off the roster

July of 93 for Stransky, so he is eligible to play.

AIUI, sometimes the Czech's and Slovak's don't care too much for players leaving their developmental system for the CHL. Might be a factor, might not.

Good to see Ritchie get a shot with Team Canada.

Oleksiak gets snubbed by Canada.....but he's eligible for Team USA as well. Might get in through the backdoor.

Thought he'd already made his decision and went to some Team Canada camp during the summer. Technically, I think he could still go either way but my feeling as an American is I'd rather not have a guy than be the backup date to the dance.

All the talk prior to today, not once did I hear Oleksiak being mentioned on a projected lineup or projected invitee to camp ... he made the team last year so i found that to be very odd. And it's not like he was bad last year..

Well Oleksiak isn't there because he's 20 and inelligible. He's also locked in for Canada, he will never play for the US internationally in hockey unless the World Cup (A non-IIHF event) comes up.

Faksa is a lock. Molin is a virtual lock. Ritchie is a virtual lock. I'd assume Lindell is a virtual lock as well. Nice to have 4 WJC players, though we should have at least 2 more (Stransky and Bystrom).

Next year Winther and Bystrom should make their teams.

What's the difference between Faksa leaving the Czech Republic and Stransky leaving?

Faksa's a first round pick they cannot justify leaving him off.

Plus I think it was contract related issues. Stransky's Czech team wanted to keep him.

It's all about which Czech club these kids come up with and what kind of terms they leave on. You remember all the problems with Ondrej Roman right? That's the same club that Stransky left.

Does their Czech team scout them as youngsters and sign them to their junior teams, kind of like European soccer clubs? I can understand their side a bit more; it still seems spiteful and not what's in the best interest of Czech national hockey. For that matter, I can understand the Ondrej Roman contract issue but it's less clear how the Czech national team allows its players to be dictated by club teams. All seems a bit incestuous to me.

Yeah, these kids start out as 13 year olds with the same club.

I'm not sure it's exactly spiteful, but it does appear to be wielded as a bit of a cudgel. What other leverage do they have? It's just kind of the understanding that sure you can go off to the CHL, but maybe you sacrifice the chance to play in major tournaments down the line if you're not the kind of player that absolutely demands to be included.

And let's not pretend the Americans don't do the same thing. Remember our last World Juniors team - we subtlely penalized some kids that went the Canadian Major Junior route as well...

Jared Knight, Stefan Noesen, Shane Prince...in exchange for USNTDP -> college boys.

Like Faksa for the Czechs, leaving him off just cuts off your nose (and possibly a piece of an ear) to spite your face...just like leaving Jack Campbell off last year would have required the same amount of rhinoplasty...

You could almost argue that again this year with Henrik Samuelsson, Reid Boucher, and Brady Vail left off

Byström scored his 3rd goal of the season against Växjö yesterday. I know it's disapointing that he's not in the WJC squad but with the way he has been playing as of late he should've been in my opinion. I guess it just came down to the matter of what type of defenseman Rönnberg wanted.

Since Byström were given more responsibility he's been really good for us.

^ Well that's good to hear at least. Just seems odd when an all-offense Dman like Klingberg made it in the past but Bystrom doesn't.

2nd star in a game where his team scored 9 goals and he only has the one. Would have liked to see that performance.
