Chris Kelly pretty much did in 2005-06 what Couturier did last year and he was considered OVERPAID by 80% of this board a few years ago... at 2.1 per season
I think some people really want glorify Couturier for some reason... What he did last year is not unseen... at all
Like you liked to point out as well, I've been following the NHL for a long time. 18-year-old rookies playing in Couturier's role putting up 27 points barely exist. Heck, 18-year-olds playing in Couturier's role barely exist. Can't remember anyone. The point was never about 27 points being unreachable, I think you must've misread if you thought so.

I'd have to dig up some quotes on that if necessary. Perhaps it was a post-draft construction because Sens management decided in April that the player they drafted would jump right into the NHL.
My conclusion on this (hopefully) is after 20 years of following the NHL closely... I have witnessed that kind of situation so many times, where a young hockey player has a great career start and finally don't rise as expected, and the opposite as well.

If Zibanejad can't score 27 points in a season, I will consider him a bust... I don't see what is the "big reach" about 27 points... 259 NHL players have scored 27 points or more last season

Chris Neil is more than ten years older than him and needed at least 5 NHL seasons to reach 27 points.

Is it the greatest season ever? No, but it's still a pretty impressive season for a kid out of junior who was getting tough minutes, sh*ty linemates and very little PP time.
Landeskog and RNH are superior players, but they also benefited from playing on crap teams (Which means tons of PP time which is where the players get their points, RNH especially is a PP mastermind). Hopkins was also ridiculously sheltered, his minutes were toilet paper soft.

Correct, it's not. All we can do is work with what we have. Whatever situation Couturier has been put into since he has been drafted, he's been able to produce.
Since Zibanajed has been drafted, all I'm seeing is excuses to justify his play (Bad coaching, rink is too small, snake bitten, etc.)
I'd he happy to be reminded on some others, bud. They probably went on to be pretty damn good, if so.
Edit: Jordan Staal might be a good example, played a pretty similar role, not quite as tough, as Couturier in his rookie year.

is this some kind of argument you're making? when talking about a prospect, it usually ends up in the realm of "who we could have had" if one prospect has out performed another up to now.
right now couturier is outscoring zibby in the ahl. i've watched zibby play and he's looked solid, but hasn't been putting up points (entire team isn't putting up major points). i haven't seen couts play too much, so i can't comment on his game, but as of right now, couts is ahead and is still looking like a very solid player. steffeg hasn't really said anything too controversial. denying that couts was good last season is silly. i think the point that he's trying to make is that he's outperformed zibby and has given people no reason to believe he's slowing down

I think we would be much better off. I didn't realize how young Teuvo Teravainen was either - he's only a few days from being eligible for this year instead of last year and has good stats for lockout Finland.

I saw a fair amount of Flyers games last year and Couts looked good out there.
I don't know why we can't admit that.
The ultimate decision can't really be assessed for years to come though, so we can refrain from throwing ourselves off of bridges.
You couldn't have asked for more from him and by any standard he had a very impressive season. Some are getting carried away discrediting and some are getting carried away talking him up.
It's unlikely we'll have made the better pick but I'll only be discouraged if we made a bad one.

Haven't seen anyone saying Couturier didn't look like he belonged out there. I'd still take Zibanejad, though.
Xspyrit did mention Greening is comparable to Couturier, which is ridiculous, considering Greening, at age 26 with some top-line/top-6 time on an offensive team, only produced ten more points than Couturier, a more skilled, higher-potential player who's 6 years younger, played a defensive role all year, and was a rookie coming straight out of juniors.

with all of the scrutiny on his game, Zibanejad is still, in my mind, our top prospect. so i just want to ask you peeps, where do you realistically want to see him by the end of the season. points, overall play, wing/center, toughness, etc. What kind of season will make everyone calm and confident in our highest pick in 10 years

Best forward if not skater in Bingo - using his body to blow up plays, scoring with skill, producing on the PP, winning faceoffs, shutting down top opposition, being a stud in the Bingo playoff run.
