Broten and Parise both should be ahead of Gio. So (ugh) should Gomez.

gomez is an ugh but parise isn't? one could argue gomez has done more than parise(won a cup). you don't get a ring for being the captain of a 2nd place team. they both left, one just went to a rival and has sucked ever since. they're equal, but gomez was on a cup team.

Gomez wasn't terrible, but why Sather gave him that is behind me. He really should have been paid what Zubrus got, maybe a little bit more. $4.5 million a year tops, and I would have even thought that was pushing it. Now he isn't even worth nearly as much as Zubrus. He racked up 60-70 points a year, but really hasn't he only scored over 20 goals once? That year he got over 30 when Gionta scored 48 after the last lockout?

The ugh is because I dislike Gomez. Pure personal opinion.

More seriously, I think it's because Driver has a Cup. Also Broten played for the Devils in the 80s when we sucked, and most Devils fans either don't want to remember those years, or are too young to do so.
That's what I thought was weird. Those same younger fans voted for Driver, who they didn't see in his prime and played on some of those same sucky teams over players like Langenbrunner, McKay and Rafalski (all three of which I would vote for over Driver).

Anyway, I think Broten would have been great on those cup teams, and even Brodeur, Stevens or Nieds wouldn't have turned the 80s Devils into winners in Broten's place.

Maybe, maybe not. As it happened, he was a good player on crappy teams. Driver benefited heavily in this poll from being a 1995 Cup winner, and a former Devils captain. That's the only explanation I can think of.

Both him and Muller, in my opinion, got a heavy bump for being a crucial part in the transition from Mickey Mouse team to Stanley Cup winners. Muller was the captain of the team when the Devils made the transition, although he didn't win the cup, and Driver was one of the best, if not the best defenseman on the squad until Stevens came along.

To me that's much more valuable than being placed on an already good team and winning a cup (Rafalski, McKay, Langenbrunner), although the 2003' team wasn't that strong looking back at the roster.

Rafalski was a good hockey player but I wouldn't even put him above Langenbrunner, Parise, and Gomez. Where's Jim when we need him?

If Broten comes in over Parise he won't even be the second best Minnesotan! The Broten's are from Minnesota by the way right? Not Michigan?

Not much interest anymore.

Maybe, I'll revive it mid-season when there is actually more traffic, but we've only gotten like 40 votes on the last couple.

You don't talk that way about the Whalers' best goalie!

Hated him his whole time with the Devils aside from that 88 playoff run. He also held out cause they wouldn't use him a starter, and he sat out a whole year before being traded. Thanks for Holik, and Pandolfo though! And a spot for Marty too eventually!

He came over in the trade for Burke. I forget who else went over with Burke, but we got Holik, and the 2nd round pick that became Jay Pandolfo. Burke had a pretty good career post Devils though.

I figured I wasn't telling you anything new anyway! If you were a Whalers fan you had to have remembered that trade. Then again I keep thinking the Whalers moved in 95, but it was 97.
