Young deal ready to go down
Michael Young’s time with the Rangers appears to be over. Industry sources are indicating that the trade could go down today with Young accepting a move to the Phillies. Young is the Rangers all-time leader in multiple categories but he is headed for Philadelphia.
OK, I'm not going to gloat. But I'm genuinely curious as to what the Phillies are doing. They're going to make him their every day 3B? He really can't play in the field without actively hurting you. Do they just not put an emphasis on defensive play?

Sort of, but they're desperate for contract hitters who actually have some sense of pitch selection. At least that's what people assume. Enough of swinging at balls in the dirt and swinging at the first pitch. The Jim Thome player/coach thing didn't really work out.
Michael Young isnt overrated. but I guess because he doesnt go up there swinging for the home run every single time doesnt make him overrated. Like Granderson.
Young's career in Arlington: .320/.368/.479
Young's career away from Arlington: .283/.326/.410
Add to that a career of poor defense and you get an extremely overrated player. Also, Young was one of the worst players in baseball last season with a dazzling .682 OPS and -1.4 fWAR/-3.2 bWAR. Terrific pickup by Philly.
@JeffPassan: How badly do the Phillies want Michael Young? Source says "they are recruiting him like he's the No. 1 pick in the country."
I mean, if your the Phillies your banking on him bouncing back and being somewhat productive. And depending on how much salary the Rangers are eating combined with the 3B market, it might not be as bad a move as initially thought.
The problem they run into is so far they've only added "If's" to their lineup when they needed some steady run producers.
They are hoping Revere can continue to develop his bat and give them a decent OBP next season, hoping Young's last season wasn't a severe decline rather a bad year.
And if they are done(ie Ruf and Brown the corner OF spots), then they are further hoping one of those guys steps up offensively.

Rual Ibanzez was fine in Philly and he might have been the worst defensive OF in baseball. Or one of the worst.
but yeah give me guys who swing for the fences on every swing. those guys are awesome.
I dont care if he is terrible, they gave up Linblom for him. he was only here for 2 months and I was already tired of him giving up the long ball! I also dont think Young will play every day, think Galvis/Frandsen could also see time at 3rd.
I'd say by a fairly wide margin too.Michael Young is most certainly IMO one of the most overrated players of this generation, if not of all time. His career OPS+ is 104, which is just above average and it means that the ballpark has a ton to do with his success. Not to mention that his defense is putrid at a career UZR of -55.4 at SS, (how the **** did he ever win a gold glove ),-19.8 at 3B, and -3.1 at 1B. As for the Gold Glove, that award stopped meaning **** after Derek Jeter got 5 and Palmeiro got 1 in 1999 after playing only 28 games at 1B. Oh, and let's not forget that his leadership is overrated. I don't really know what goes on in that locker room, but a good leader would not ask for a trade every time he's asked to change positions.
Oh, and in case if you need traditional stats, here you go:
Career home: .320/.368/.479 OPS: .847
Career away: .283/.326/.410 OPS: .736
Those are extremely lopsided splits and being out of that hitter's haven in Texas will expose him for the overrated fraud he is.

I actually like this trade since the phils had to do something to improve 3B and it's a shortterm stop gap for one of Cody Asche or Mikhail Franco plus he doesn't cost them much money.
But I hate to see them give up Bonilla, that really sucks as imo he was the phils best prospect out of the pen. (unless Aumont gets his comand under control)
Maybe Young can put in a good word to Josh Hamilton as the phils need more power in the lineup. They also could use another starter now that Worley is gone, they bettter hope that Doc is 100% healthy and pitching like he did the previous year, if they can't find an additional arm to bring in. On the other hand they have a number of interesting pitching prospects that are right around the corner in Jesse Biddle, Ethan Martin, Adam Morgan, Austin Wright and Jon Pettibone. If one or two of them could work their way onto the starting 5 within the next 2 years then that should help.

I think Young will better than Polanco at the plate. They had to do something for 3b as I dont think they could give the job to Kevin Frandsen after only 2 good months. And Galvis is terrible offensively. As bad as Young is he is probably better than the other **** options they had.
