Messier Never Touched The Puck
I thought I'd throw this out here, considering we're celebrating the 12th anniversary of the Cup. It's meaningless, I know, but till this day I believe this:
On the game-winning goal, Messier NEVER touched the puck. He never got his stick on the puck, it was deflected off of a Vancouver defenseman.
Anyone one agree/disagree? Watch the tape closely, he makes an attempt to hit it but never makes contact.
The other goal that was deflected off a defenseman was Matteau' Game #7 winner against the Devils. The wrap around went off of Fetisov and past Brodeur...it wasn't a clean wraparound...

I think that's been known for years. Heck even then I remember the announcers commenting that Messier never touched the puck.

But Messier used his Jedi skills to force the puck home. It is for that reason that he was awarded the goal.

I watched the tape literally hundreds of times and went frame by frame at a video studio with it.. Ultimately I convinced myself Messier did score the goal. Not easy to spot but I'm pretty sure of it.

It was easier to tell on the ESPN feed, but Mess did touch the puck.

Sounds like some of the theories of who shot JFK.
I'll add another one, Noonan scored it...and I've been saying it for years!

Noonan was the last guy to touch the puck other than the goalie.
Messier never laid a splinter on it.

tough to say. i remember watching the replay after the goal and thinking he didn't touch it, but who knows. Either way the puck crossed the line and his celebration of that goal hangs on my wall.

I am watching a replay of game 7 - he never touched it.
VIDEO
This is an important point because it just goes to show the disappointing truth of politics getting woven into the game. The fact that Messier shows as credited with the goal on the scoresheet is a lie, and it stays that way simply because it's what would make the best story. No one cares about the truth.
