Michael Young is defintely not a far superior hitter. He was atrocious last season.

Youkilis has been better each of the last three seasons according to wRC+ and wOBA. As well as a better OPS 2 of the 3 years.

Young has also been a bad fielder for his entire a career.

Young is a 1B/DH, is he not?

2nd/SS early in his career, now plays mostly 3B, 1B, and DH.

Young will play literally anywhere you ask him to play. Great teammate to have.

I don't think Cashman would be that crazy. The Yankees are trying to do things on the cheap, but not that cheap.

Seriously. It's anathema to the philosophy of the team.

He has Granderson (along with Hughes and Nova) up on the trade market - trade Granderson as a package for pitching, sign Hamilton?

There were some reports last week of the Yankees being a potential dark horse, but we'll see

If Alex Rodriguez is committed to the Yankees as he claims, if he really wants to atone for his sins in pinstripes, now is the time, when money is tight and the roster is full of holes.

How can A-Rod help, defective hip and all? By deferring a portion of the $29 million he’s owed in 2013, just as David Wright is doing for the Mets this season. Wright is letting the Wilpons withhold $8 million, which represents 50 percent of his annual salary, to give the Mets financial flexibility.

If Wright could be that generous, why not A-Rod? He figures to miss half the season in post-surgery rehab, so wouldn’t it be something if Rodriguez picked up the phone and told Hal Steinbrenner he can do without $14.5 million right now?

No one is asking Rodriguez to forfeit the money; it is, after all, guaranteed. But with over $325 million in earnings to date, it’s not like he’s hurting for cash. Put it this way: Right now, the Yankees need the money more than their third baseman, which is crazy in itself.

Gardner is back for another year.

Bryan Hoch ‏@BryanHoch
Yankees announce they have agreed on a one-year deal with OF Brett Gardner, avoiding arbitration.

It was retweeted by the Yankees so it's true.

They're running a background check on Hamilton? What does that even mean? Are they seeing if he has a history of drug abuse? They're going to be disappointed.

Ya, I thought his background was pretty well documented by now, but I guess not. Maybe they want to see if he's back off the wagon or something.

I'm happy to hear that Gardner is coming back.

Interesting stat I saw on MLBN;

From 2005-2008, 42 5+ year contracts were signed

From 2009-2012, 24 5+ year contracts were signed and just 2 this off-season

It's also become apparent that Rafaiel Soriano is not as hot of a commodity on the FA market as thought and may actually lose money as a result of opting out

thats a really weird case, i would've thought he's take the money from the Yankees even just to set up Rivera. For a relief pitcher he took a very big risk not taking the option (13 million?)

I guess he thought the market for a good closer was better than it actually is.

Scott Boras was heavily influential in that decision to opt out

Seems like they got money to burn out there now. Could be a good deal for them.

If they don't trade anyone, the Dodgers will have the highest payroll of any team in league history.

That's a ridiculous salary for Grienke, I can only imagine what Felix, Strasburg, and Kershaw will demand in a few years.

Much more. Superstar Pitchers are such a premium now a days. Teams are more reliant on pitching.

Greinke is still reaping the benefits of the season he had two or three years ago.

He was a nightmare to face in MVP05 for PS2. 90+ fastball. 58mph curveball with a ridiculous break.
