Athansiou is really exceeding my expectations. I wasn't so sure what we were getting at the time of the draft. Granted, all I've seen has been highlights, but he's certainly been scoring highlight reel goals. On some of these plays, he looks too good for the OHL.

His tools are crazy. He's got great stickhandling, mind-blowing speed, size (6'2!). If he can develop that shot, I can see no reason for him to not make the NHL in some capacity. He could at least be a helluva 4th line energy type guy.

He does seem inconsistent, though. If you look at his game by game stats, he'll get a great point streak going and then lose it for 3-4 games, and then get it back, and then lose it again.

He may have a shot for the world junior team next year if he keeps it up

I think this is his 3rd year in the OHL. Do you think he'll play all 4 years?

edit: nevermind! He's still 18. It seems like he'll still be WJC eligible at 19 in his 4th OHL season. One would think that would make him a strong candidate.

I was a big fan of Athansiou when we drafted him. I had watched him play the previous years in London and always saw those skills. He just never really had the playing time to justify them. Basically playing a third line role, very limited PP time.

When I heard he had been traded to Barrie I was quite excited to see what he could do with the increased ice time. Safe to say he hasn't disappointed.

Yeah with his size, speed and PK'ing skills he seemed like a very safe pick to be able to make an NHL roster at some point down the line. The trade worked out very well and it's great to see him be such an offensive force. It helps to make up for a guy like Sheahan who was drafted specifically to be a scoring line center but now seems destined to be more of a bottom 6 defensive specialist. Maybe Sheahan will begin to show some offensive flashes like Landon Ferrraro has done this year in Grand Rapids.
