The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
Yeah, really, come on guys, this thread is for pot-shots at Phoenix/Glendale as a market, COG as a council, Gary Bettman and Greg Jamison, IEH and others as suitors and potential owners of the Coyote franchise.
(I left out some others this thread takes potshots at like Skeete & Beasely & Hocking and such... cuz that would get boring)
Phoenix/Glendale as a market
COG city council (think that's what you meant)
Gary Bettman and Greg Jamison
IEH and others as suitors and potential owners of the Coyote franchise
All seem to be reasonable topics for debate in a thread about: The Sale of the Phoenix Coyotes in the discussion section of The Business of Hockey
After three years of trying (NHL) to find a buyer for the league owned Coyotes, week not months, two weeks, lowest attendance in the league and 16 straight years of losses in the current market what exactly should we be discussing in this particular thread?
The Arena Managers are the NHL IIRC (or at least the company the NHL used to buy the team) and have been criticized heavily for their handling of the event booking for the team. At the very least a decent arena manager would be able to bring Jobing.com into the realm of the other teams in the league that have multiple arenas in the city (as right now it sits just below the Halifax Metro Centre and just above the Florence Civic Centre).
Even Miami/Sunrise both have arenas in the top 30 and the Panthers have also received their fair share of criticism for building an arena outside of the major centre they're trying to represent. At the very least Phoenix and Glendale should be able to operate at similar levels to the Twin City teams.
Not to mention the Sprint Centre in KC outdraws twenty NHL arenas but as far as I know Glendale has never looked into the potential of not having an anchor tenant but keeping the arena open.
One thing about Florida is the arenas are 30 miles apart. Plus the sprawl is decidedly northward there so it makes sense to have an arena that far north of Miami where it can draw from Palm Beach.

Apparently we are supposed to lament how poor Coyotes fans have never been given a fair shot to support their team and how horrible it would be for the game of hockey if this burgeoning hockey hotbed is not given another decade to prove itself.
Interesting, you do know that it's generally accepted that the 23% of Canadian teams contributed over 33% of NHL revenue? You are also aware that the CBC gives 100 million per season for the Saturday night + partial playoff rights of 7 teams, while NBC is giving 200 million for 23 teams over the entire season, hmmm yeah Canadian teams bad. Canadian teams bad considering Canadian teams don't see 100% of that 100 million since it is shared amongst the American teams, I wonder if any of that NBC contract comes up north, I doubt it.
a whole 100 million a year!!! the los angeles dodgers baseball contract will be around 245 million a year. that is for one baseball team. and doesn't even include playoff games. 100 million a year is nothing for sports tv contracts. the nhl wants to keep teams in big markets that is why phoenix will exist as an nhl franchise. the nhl needs tv contracts to grow. there is no more money in tickets sales. most teams are selling tickets at high prices and lots of them. at a certain point if you raise them higher you will make less money. \
make the game more exciting for tv is what the sport should be focusing on.
I'm not sure what I heard on Sportsnet from Gene Principe who is in New York. I'm not sure if he said both sides agreed to get together during the week but haven't finalized anything or if they are trying to get together to meet later this week. Anyone else happen to be listening?
I guess you mean NHL and Jamison ? It would be about time, seems that's what's needed to get this over with.
Well, that and the fact that Jamison needs to buy the team to get the AMF deal official, and he needs the money from the AMF deal to buy the team...the wheel keeps on spining.

Yeah that one has me wondering about the mechanisms behind this....

Are the Dodgers a hockey team? The NHL nationally nets only $200 million. Phoenix averaged 9,000 viewers on their local RSN in 2010-11, 7,000 in 2011-12 and only appeared 3 times(all on the road) last season on VS./NBCSN and 4 times(3 road, 1 home) this season if there was one.
There's not much value for a tv deal of any kind in Phoenix. 4 appearances out of 104 games(208 appearances) isn't hard to replace considering Canadian teams took 9 of them.
So now we are all going to become paranoid over an avatar????
Gee.... last time I checked around here she was no longer a factor since she was defeated???
The fact that, as a so-called civic politician (on the verge of her exit), she is still taking immature pot-shots at Canada opens herself up to scrutiny and ridicule. But then again, I guess it isn't as much of a sin like the Canadian media taking pot-shots at the feable southern American markets who are on the verge of collapse now, is it?

When NBC was negotiating the last TV contract with the NHL, they told the NHL that not having the Coyotes didn't make any difference to the contract amount. Having Phoenix means nothing to NBC and that's obvious because they barely show them.
Said this before... The NHL has been trying for 40 years to get the BIG TV deal and its just not going to happen. Sure they might get some more lucrative deals, but they are never going to get the kind of money that will change them from a gate revenue league to a TV revenue league.
As far as making the game more exciting.... Might help a little, but remember this... One of the reasons that Hockey doesn't draw well on TV is because a lot a people have trouble watching the game on TV. They can't follow the puck and as a result can't follow the game. Why do you think the NHL tried the Glow Puck years back? It was for the sole reason of trying something to make make the game easier to follow.
The only reason why the Coyotes are still where they is just because of Gary Bettman's ego. Else this team would be long gone, and with good reasons. Not much of a hockey market there.
...ya, hi ajmidd. Ever hear of Pink Floyd? Do they
"creep you out" as well? Cover to one of their albums.
Of course I've heard of Pink Floyd (after all I was the one who suggested the Comfortably Numb thread title...) Just not familiar with that album cover is all

Yeah..... and I guess it was okay for people to crawl out of the woodwork and harass her beforehand..... prompting her response. Never see anyone condemning that behavior.
