Keep in mind though the Rays have one the best pitching coaches in the MLB. He's had success with other underachieving guys in the past and Montgomery isn't some jobber, but actually talented.
I see him as a lottery ticket. Some chance they turn him into a bullpen arm, slim chance you get a dominant reliever or maybe even a starter. Great to get a high ceiling like that as the third player in a deal that I personally would have done just for Myers and Odorizzi.
Ouch just looked at Montgomery's stats. He really doesn't like missing the bats does he? Big ERA over the past 2 years and h/9 over 10. Jesus they got a lotta work to do

This is how I see it too. If any team can get the best out of a guy like Montgomery it is the Rays. Consider some of their other projects that have turned out, getting a former top-prospect might not be a bad idea.
Getting a guy like that in addition to a top-5 prospect and a top-50 prospect is even better.

I can't believe how much worse the trade got for KC since the last time I checked this thread. Trading Myers is bad enough, but Odorizzi too? Unreal. Talk about a contrast in the intelligence of the two GMs involved.
Royals should have gotten more, but they also weren't doing a whole lot with their farm system the last ten years, either. Maybe the Royals are hoping to make a few other moves and this will fall in line.
So where does the Royal's rotation rank in the Al Central? Where do they rank in the Al Central?
At best, the answer to both questions is third. This trade might not be so bad if it were putting the Royals over the top, but instead it's making a 72-win team into, what, a 77-win team? I guess if Perez stays healthy all year and Hosmer actually plays to his potential, that total could get into the low 80s - which obviously still wouldn't be good enough. Thus, all the Royals have done is subtract their best farm pieces for the sake of going from bad to less bad or, best-case scenario, mediocre. I feel sorry for Royals fans.
Or you think they'll start him at AAA for a few weeks to gain another year of service time?

None of the three advanced prospects are guaranteed to be on the opening day roster, but Friedman said he would expect all to contribute during the season.
The Rays are still weak at DH and catcher, and they may still be looking for someone with positional versatility who can also spell Loney at 1B and provide some power from the right side. Nothing would shock me as far as the Rays opening day roster is concerned, but at this point I'm not really expecting Myers to be a regular from the beginning.
Shields and Davis were two of the Rays' most appealing pieces, so the team might be shifting towards the free agency route now that they've dealt those assets and saved a good amount of money in the process.
Kansas City needed pitching badly...but this is a massive risk
Well, they just get top 15 pitcher and good #4-5 guy in Davis for unproven prospects. It's not end of the world. Montgomery screams mediocrity. Shields in division with White Sox, Indians and Twins... could be a Cy Young candidate.

Win-win here.
And lets not forget that as unlikely as it is Myers could still not become what he projects to become. We have all seen it time and time again.
I knew this day would come but it still sucks to lose Shields. He was a gamer and gave it his all every time he went out, I have a lot of respect for him. Hope he does well for KC. The Rays really maximized his value with the package they got back. If Myers develops into the player he's supposed to he'll compliment Longoria in the middle of the lineup.
