I've been in this journalism game for a long time

Always a difference between what the media reports and what is actually going on

This isn't a "Buster Olney" thing

Listen

I don't like ESPN either but Olney is legit

If you want to complain about Olney complain about him advertising his Insider column, that's basically my only complaint. Otherwise there really is no reason to criticize

Now someone like Rovell on the other hand

Dodgers gotta be closing in on 250m

edit : looks like they are at 239m plus whatever Ryu Hyun-Jin got.

edit : Looks like without Ryu Hyun-Jin's contract, the Dodgers will pay just about 13.5m in luxury tax.

Hilarious considering that their payments are almost 3x as high as the marlins payroll

triple edit : I'm wrong

Yep, here's the updated total pre-Ryu signing: http://www.truebluela.com/2010/11/30...roll-worksheet

Ryu gets 6 years/36 M with opt out after 5 years reports Heyman.

As @JonHeymanCBS just tweeted, Ryu gets $36m over 6 years. Opt-out after 5, with innings threshold.

But I keep hearing about a sign-and-trade deal. Is this true? The Dodgers would trade Ryu for major league-proven pitching.

Lefty.

Changeup his best pitch.

Good command.

Around 91 MPH in terms of FB velocity.

I don't "hate" him. I'm just not a fan because he's usually speculating instead of actually breaking news. Then he'll go and criticize other reporters for their work even though he doesn't really have the best track record himself.

He's a Vikings fan so I can't hate him but I do dislike him.

What is Ryu's former Korean club gonna do with the $25+ million that the Dodgers paid them?

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS
exact figure for grilli is 6.75M for 2. #bucs

6.75 M per? Total? Neither one makes sense to me, lol.

guess no team was willing to give him that 3 - year deal.
Too bad, woulda looked good in Jays blue, but their bullpen is pretty strong none the less anyways.

Praying that Oliver won't retire. I have a feeling AA must think that, or he probably would of gave Grilli those 3 years

Jays reportedly offered him more than what he got, but he wanted too stay in Pittsburgh...

I heard that too. I heard Cubs, Jays and Pirates all offered him 2 yrs, and if he wasn't offered that 3rd yr, he would stay a Pirate, which he did.

I'm happy with it. I don't like the idea of giving longer deals to relief pitchers, or paying them too much. They're so easily replaceable and the Pirates have been able to consistently find gems in the rough under Huntington (such as Grilli himself, who was signed away from Philadelphia's AAA team mid-season 2010). Grilli is a 36 year-old power pitcher, too...

Hanrahan is a superior pitcher to Grilli...but Hanrahan will get ~$7 million via arbitration this year, less than Grilli will get for two seasons, and then he's off to free agency. Grilli should be a fine bridge at closer until one of the youngsters is ready to take the job. It's just unfortunate that the Pirates couldn't trade Hanrahan at the deadline last year because of being right in the thick of things before falling off the cliff after the deadline. Hanrahan's value today is probably half of what it was in July.

They're silent because they can't afford to splurge. It's not shocking.

I did not say I was shocked.
I should've used 'untypical of the Yankees' considering these recent payrolls.

■2012: $209,792,900
■2011: $207,047,964
■2010: $213,359,389
■2009: $201,449,189
■2008: $209,081,577
■2007: $189,639,045
■2006: $194,663,079
■2005: $208,306,817

Steinbrenner is sticking to his guns.
The team must be under $189M before 2014 to reset the luxury tax.
The Yankees truely have painted themselves into a corner with their aged, overpaid roster.

The Yankees are old schtick has been s repeated by haters for the past 10 yrs. Yes they are old, but they have the foundation to rebuild on the fly AND compete at the same time.

You've gotta love how the same media figures who have attacked the Yankees for spending too much in the past are now attacking them for not spending enough.
