I was barely in high school when Gomez left so I don't recall it vividly, but wasn't he very vocal about leaving the Devils and not being happy here? And didn't Holik chase a 9 million dollar per year paycheck? Holik never had a bad word to say about the Devils. He just got paid like a boss.
I'm not sure if Gomez really trashed the Devils. He didn't pull a ''I really wanna be here'' either like someone else though. He pretty much was just looking for the money, and like Holik was paid like a boss by Sather. I just remember Gomez saying it was time to move on or something.
I still think Sather wanted to stick it to the Devils cause Gomez was never worth that much. Maybe a little more than what Zubrus got on his contract that was signed the same year.
It certainly is. But I think the immense booing he got has some effect on the difficulty on going from Devils to Rangers though. I don't think we'll see it again soon.
Gomez never trashed Devils, on the contrary he said he owed them everything. He did trash the Rangers after being traded however.
After his poor performance on his last contract, and particularly how awful he's been the past 2 years, he has nerve to ask for more than $2 million. That's even too much, but like I said before. I can't expect him to take a deal as low as Sykora's.
I'm honestly not as opposed to having Gomez back as I thought I'd be, but...
Even for $2 - $3 million, I think we could do a lot better for that money.
Almost certainly, especially if a lot of free agents hit the market. And we have to be tight with every dollar if we're a low budget team due to ownership problems again. Taking gambles on Gomez is not prudent.

Gomez said before UFA started that he would not go to a Devils rival, and then when July 1 came around, he promptly signed with the Rangers. During his first presser as a Ranger, he said something like, "I always dreamed of wearing the Blue shirt when I was a kid" or something along those lines. **** that, he deserved all the booing he got.
Precisely.
Money problems combined with lack of skilled forward depth... it's just not wise to gamble on Gomez of all players.
The team is already taking a gamble on Tedenby, Butler and possibly Sykora again.
I don't think we're taking a gamble with Tedenby, and Butler. If anything it's a gamble thinking they can replace Parise. Their contracts are two way's, and they can be buried right back in the minors with no problem at an AHL salary. Even if we have a season, and they perform decent, I don't think it's a big enough sample size, or long enough for them to prove they can have a one way contract either.
It's not that they're expected to take the place of Parise. No one's that crazy.
It's that if neither of them pan out (which isn't too far from reality)... there's really nobody ready to jump up and take their place.
There's a revolving door of 4th liners to step in and not much else.
That means either giving up assets and seeing what's available on the trade market.
Or hoping Lou can make out like a bandit with players on waivers again.
My point is, there's too much up in the air regarding the players we currently have to hand out a contract to a guy whose production has steadily been going down the toilet.

We could always go the UFA route though. Unless you're strictly talking this season only. If there is one.
Well I won't hide my opinion on the matter, I hated Gomez when he left and still do. Although his recent struggles and the Parise fiasco kind of overshadow the hatred.
Paul Heyman took a pretty weak shot at the Devils tonight on RAW.
Yeah he made us sound like the Leafs or Flyers. A team that hasn't won the Cup in like decades. Would have made more sense if he said ''Punk is the champion! Something your Devils choked at this year!'' instead of ''Unlike your Devils, how many years has it been since they brought you a championship?'' or whatever he said.

It was a generic bad guy wrestling promo ******** on the hometown team, I doubt Heyman even knows the last time the Devils won the Stanley Cup. It was funny to hear "New Jersey Devils" on WWE TV though
Clown show in free agency? By doing what, exactly?
I don't begrudge him going for the pay day in UFA. I do resent the fact that he literally said that he would not sign with the Rangers, two days before he did just that.
Hedberg has not lost a game in regulation since that Calgary game where he came in relief of Marty! That was last January!
Technically he 'lost' the ill-fated Game 3 of the Panther series giving up the GWG.

All the while recruiting Drury to go there too with his 'Let's do this!' comment

The reason that people dislike players like Parise and Gomez is pretty comical.
He said this, he said that, he lead us on. Who cares? Both players earned the right to hit UFA, and utilized that ability.
