Day and Benson are two 2016 picks that are pushing for exceptional status. Ill be interested to see how that draft progresses

He mentions that in a game against fellow Finn, Mikko Koivu, Barkov was the best player on the ice.

It made me wonder how they compared at the same stage of development in the SM-Liga and here's the answer.

Mikko Koivu in his draft year

48gp 4g 3a 7pts 34pim +1

Alex Barkov Jr.in his draft year

31gp 14g 14a 28pts 4pim +8

That's a huge difference considering that when Koivu was drafted he was already 19 years and 1 month, and Barkov will only be 17 years and 9 months come June 24th.

Koivu is more or less a perrenial 20 goal 60 point guy in the NHL. It's scary to think how much better Barkov can be, maybe something like a 30-35 goal 85-100 point centre.
Koivu is more like a very good two-way 65 - 70 point center (last four seasons he's played at 65 point or better pace) on a pretty weak offensive Minnesota team.

And Barkov is better? That's impressive.

Now it was only one game...but still. It's impressive nonetheless that a 17 year old player was better than a veteran 65-70 point NHLer.

I think the point was that in that game that Mikko and Barkov played together, Barkov was the better player. Now. That's very impressive.

I will be sad if Barkov is not a Leaf a year from now.

I'm actually expecting it. I can just see us getting screwed in a 30 team draft, or seeing us play a 48 game season and seeing us us finishing with like the 14th pick...

The hockey Gods don't like us enough. The balls will drop poorly for us or we will play our way out of a top pick. Its just too predictable.

Exactly.

Although I'm hoping maybe, just maybe that Rielly is the start of some luck

Well Lupul, Gardiner, Kessel and Rielly being the start of some luck

But expecting for that to not be the case haha

I'd almost be tempted to say Drouin is probably the most dynamic offensive player in this draft. He's that talented. Maybe not much more than MacKinnon, and at the very least at an even level with MacKinnon, but I would have no issue with someone saying that.

But his lack of a defined all around game and more meanness means I don't think he can go number 1. But he's going to be a hell of an offensive player.
Yes it's closer than you think. Drouin has been better offensively this season, and his skating has really picked up... Maybe the best skater in the draft

He doesn't have that meanness as you said, so he wouldn't be at giroux's level.

Seth Jones 1G and 1A tonight.

Now 28pts in 30 games and tied for 3rd overall in defensemen pts with Rielly.

If MacKinnon and Barkov are gone, I'll gladly take Jones.

I like Mackinnon, but Jones is probably the best player in this draft. We will see.

They're really close, and if you have a centre and a d-man that are close or even, you take the centre imo.

MacKinnon
Barkov
Jones

I really don't have a problem putting Barkov over Jones, either.

My order has changed a bit

Mackinnon
Barkov
Monahan
Jones (if we needed D, he would be one higher)
Drouin

drouin ahead of lindholm? pure madness imo. with lindholm leafs gonna get 1st line center a la eric staal. just what the leafs need....

5'11" Lindolm plays a similar game to 6'3" Staal?

Haven't heard or seen any of this guy. May have to dig a little bit; But Drouin looks to be a helluva player if the other 4 are off the board.

I'd want him, Jones or Mackinnon...However with our luck watch it not happen
Although I preach BPA due to our weakness in the forward area I'd prefer either Barkov or Mackinnon.

His point is, lindholm plays a lot bigger than his size. He's a strong guy I really would be happy with him as well.

Center Elias Lindholm of Brynas IF is one of nine top prospects on the roster eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft in Newark, N.J. Forwards Sorensen of Quebec, Alexander Wennberg of Djurgardens IF, Boyce-Rotevall of Timra IK, Viktor Arvidsson of Skelleftea AIK and Jacob de la Rose of Leksands IF, defensemen Jesper Pettersson of Linkopings HC and Linus Arnesson of Djurgardens IF and goalie Joel Lassinantti of Lulea HF are the others.

Lindholm and de la Rose are rated No. 1 and No. 3, respectively, on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary list for skaters in Sweden. Lassinantti is ranked No. 3 among goaltenders.

Lindholm, a 6-foot, 191-pound righty, projects to be a future top-six forward with star potential.

"He's a complete package," Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting, told NHL.com. "He could very well be the next Peter Forsberg. He's an excellent skater and great competitor who gives it 110 percent on every shift. He can skate, score and pass, and is physically strong even though he is a finesse type of player."

Lindholm has five goals and 17 points in 29 games for Brynas in Sweden's Elitserien this year.
And no we (HF's Leafs board) are not saying this, Goran Stubb is saying this.

I wouldn't complain about nik backstrom centering our first line at all

I caught lindholm play once and imo he looked like a stronger grabovski with slightly better awareness.. I think the analysis (excluding the forsberg part) has it right. Future top 6 forward with star potential. I look forward to seeing him in the WJCs.

Regardless, not a very good point. From what I've seen Lindholm and Staal are VERY different players.
