Hockey is absolutely on the rise in Croatia. Being of Croation decent I am in the proccess of applying for citizenship, the Croation ambassador's ears percked up when I mentioned Medvescak. He said people are starting to flock to hockey right now. Adding a KHL team would only add to the buzz.
imo everyone is already fed up by Mamič, hooliganism etc. I just hope that hockey doesnt get infiltrated by idiots like football in generally.
Croatia is having quite the rise in general. I gotta go find a vacation home out there before it gets too late.
They had a great rise in development until around 2008 when the economic crisis hit Croatia, particularly the tourist industry. In 2009 they had a big drop in tourism (About 15% If I recall) they then created visa-free tourist packages for Russians, about 20,000 Russians would visit Croatia every year and it was rising. Sadly Russians will need a visa to travel to Croatia again as the EU is making Croatia enforce visa restrictions for Russians from April next year . They will lose 20 million euros because of this . I was in Croatia in 2010, beautiful country Hvar
Take a look at Montenegro too, it is very beautiful. Apprently close to 40% of property in Montenegro is owned by Russians Around 100,000 Russians visit Montenegro every year because of no Visa restriction. Take a look at Budva, Montenegro.
I think the most popular destination for Russians is Thailand with more than 650,000 visitors in 2010 and they are on average the biggest daily spenders there ($122 per day). Too many Russians is not a good thing though

I guess they spend it all on hookers, because there is no way you spend that much on food/accomodation in a place like Thailand. Mains cost like 2-3 bucks there, beach hut 10-15 etc.

A lot of people apparently like to buy trendy clothes there.

Goa is lately full of Russians too, will spend next 2 weeks there. I plan to live like a king from 100 bucks a day, and we are family of four. Just hope Russians didnt spoil it meantime

Russian tourists I have seen Russian tourists abusing locals for not understanding Russian many times
Personally on my travels I make sure I go to locations where Russians do not visit.

true
I´m backpacker so there isnt high chance I will run into "Russian tourists", happened on few occasions and can say that fellow backpackers from Russia were all cool types who were horrified by prospect of running into another Russian tourists as well
****ing Thailand is CRAWLING with Russians! So is Turkey and Dominican Republic.
In fact one of the biggest brawls I have ever been in my life was in Thailand with a bunch of drunken Russian idiots harassing locals. Other then that it is a great place and Thais are truly a wonderful people with an amazing country.
The Russian passport really should say "не позорь нас дурак" right on the front cover in giant letters. People say Americans are bad tourists but Russians are 100 times worse for the most part. Some Gorillas just shouldn't be aloud to leave the zoo.
once in Turkey my wife wanted to buy some leather jacket so we visited a shop. We entered the big shop along woth two busses of russian tourists, everyone proudly wearing wristbands with tour operator´s logo (whoever sees it doubles his price) My wife choose one jacket and the seller said stupid price. I told listen buddy we arent part of that group, see my car standing outside on parking plot, and seller immediatelly apologised and cut the price to half of the original one.
This illustrates how Russian spend their money - they are getting ripped off and their tour guides are acting like a touts, taking % of everything they spend. Average Slovak tourists are no better, naive as ****, relying on tourists guides (= touts) because they cant speak foreign languages. Many are frustrated and their frustration often leads to misbehaving, because they are pissed and feel like a walking wallet, and like a sheep, in fact they are a sheeps, so they target their anger on locals/local customs and blame everyone but a true villain - TOUR OPERATORS, ruthlessly exploiting their stupidity.

This is true. Phone booths/ calling card machines have instructions in Russian on them, and there's lots of hot chicks walking around with schmucks with mullets.
The only connection this discussion can have with expansion might be countries being afraid to have 4 Russian teams visiting them with their fans within a week haha.
But be cool people. I don't know one country whose inhabitants are seen as nice tourists. Really no country. Unfortunately human beings tend to think they are kings when they come to a country just because they "invest" a few bucks into tourism industry.
Whenever I am in another country I try to avoid big tourist groups of any country (Germans, Russians, British, Japanese, Chinese, Americans etc.).
I imagine the size of the arena is the lest of the problem. The fact that it's built in early sixties (in Soviet Union no less) probably means that no amount of reconstructions and refurbishments will bring it up to 21st century standarts. Still if they can give the same guarantees of a new arena as Donetsk, I'd allow them temporarily play on a pond if necessary.
If only they could sell out 6800 seats it would be great for the KHL, Kiev is a huge market and they surely would build bigger arena in the future. If they can't sell out 6800 seats, small arena is not really an issue.
Market-wise Kiev may be attractive, but I for one am disappointed, hockey-wise, that so few Ukrainian players play for Donbass Doneck. Is it 8 or so? Contrast that with Slovan that is almost 100% composed of Slovak players (+1 Czech, 1 Canadian). If Ukraine is to have 2 KHL teams, then I definitely think Slovakia should also have a 2nd KHL team (Košice).
Also, the KHL will need to do something about reorganizing the conferences in terms of East/West. It's already unfair this season with there being 14 Western vs. 12 Eastern teams. If Kiev, Zagreb, and Milan join... then the present assignation of teams into conferences would become untenable.
4 would be too many. 3 would be fine, but we currently lack a new arena in the 3rd Slovak region (Central/North-West).
However, Košice in Eastern Slovakia has a new arena. All it lacks (apparently) is the owners' initiative to join the KHL. I hope that changes in the upcoming months. The steelworks in Košice still haven't been sold to the Shakhtar Donetsk owner, and the present owner, U. S. Steel of Pittsburgh, does not appear to have the ambition to create a Slovak version of the Pittsburgh Penguins in Košice.
