All of this. Plus sometimes a biopsy is done (other times it's done at the same time as the surgery), and analyzed by pathology to specify even further type/grade (I'm not sure if they use TNM or if they have a special staging system for stomach cancer), which can impact treatment decisions.
FWIW TNM is used here at Sloan-Kettering for stomach cancer:
Quote:
Doctors use the TNM (tumor, node, metastasis) system to describe the stage of a cancer. This abbreviation summarizes the depth of penetration of the tumor into the stomach wall (T), whether it has spread to nearby lymph nodes (N), and whether it has metastasized, or spread, to other parts of the body (M).

Found this very helpful. I'm confident that...everything will at least somewhat work out.. Was doing my reading, and it seems that Chemo/Radiation is a rather popular combo of treatments, then surgeries if necessary..
Okay good. I mean both of us are scared and stuff. But I feel like she can pull through.
To put it all in basic terms everyone can understand. (No need for doctor talk)
Surgery, Chemotherapy, and Radiation Therapy. In that order. Some may never need Chemo. Some may never need Radiation Therapy (in fact it's rare but not unheard of). If she's already had surgery, then Chemo may very well be the next step. I hope not, but ... the stage of the cancer also plays an important part in what is the proper approach.
I hope her strength will pull her through. Above all else be supportive. It will be remembered.
Wow, I emailed Mike Schopp asking for some help finding a baseball card for my dad for Christmas (I know nothing of the hobby) and he emailed me back within about three minutes, while their show was on air today.
Lol'd. I actually never knew what the word suppository meant until I watched a futurama episode, but I did know that people took medicine that way
I think I learned it from the first time I watched "Full Metal Jacket." It's from one of the boot camp scenes where one of the privates responded to Ernie that Kennedy was shot from "That book suppository."
