Finland is going to be a sick team to watch. They're my sleeper pick for Gold. I'm really excited to watch Barkov play.

I'd say it's kinda hard for him to play in a game in Canada when he's attending the training camp in Finland.

Markus isn't his big brother. He's a good player and an asset to this team no doubt, but hardly that much of a difference maker on or off the ice.

I'd say it looks to be either Määttä or Salomäki.

Well Markus Granlund has usually been the captain of this age group so I think he gets the job

C Ma. Granlund
A Salomäki
A Määttä

He's been an U18 captain, but the squad has few others who have pulled the duty as well.

Määttä was the captain in Lake Placid in August (and he's got an A in his club team), Granlund carried the C in Four-Nations tournament in Czech Republic couple of weeks later. Those were practically two different squads though. Ristolainen got the job in Sundsvall, but that may have been in absence of several heavy hitters.

Salomäki has been a staple A for a while now.

Hard to say who it's going to go to in the end. I'll have to rephrase that Granlund definitely appears an option, but is far from a lock for the job.

Finland is definitely going to be fun to watch on the big ice. They should beat Latvia and the Czechs but the Swiss always come out as sleepers but they should be able to handle the Swiss. Then they play Sweden so they definitely don't have an easy road to the finals IMO. I can't wait to watch!

Being consistent doesn't necessarily mean that a goalie/player has enough talent or the right qualities to truly succeed at a clearly higher level of play. Sami Aittokallio and Joni Ortio were our previous starting goalies at the WJC's, I'm not exactly seeing the same potential in Laurikainen. Korpisalo might be at that level next year, but this year's tournament probably comes too soon for him. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Yeah earlier this year. But he's never played in WJC and has barely touched men's games, which doesn't exactly yell veteran leadership. Besides, Määttä would've probably been the U-18 captain this year had he been available.

I'd say the C will go between Granlund and Salomäki, with odds tipping slightly on Markus's side.

The thing with Granlund is that he's gone now for 8 games in a row without any points. His team's situation overall isn't good at all, and I can't help but wonder how much these factors have affected his self-confidence. I'm not saying he's going to fail in the WJC, but I don't know if Markus in his current state would be the best choice for captain.

I'd go with either Salomäki or Määttä if it was up to me.

Miro Aaltonen would be a solid choice for atleast an alternate captain.

Imo it's like this:

C - Määttä
A - Aaltonen
A - Salomäki

Määttä should be the captain and he most likely will be. Doesn't matter that much which players are the alternatives. Isn't it usually the team itself that decides or is it the coach? A good coach should have vision to decide which one's the best for team.

Samu Perhonen has joined to camp. Perhonen surely has potential, 196cm/6'5". Few years ago he was considered as Finland's next NHL-goalie. Last season was really hard for him because of injuries, has been better this season. 91% and 3.0 GAA behind of lower end team.

Good news. Apparently he had some kind of minor injury due to which he didn't first make it, but has now gotten healthy enough to give it a shot.

Let's hope it doesn't hamper him much, as in his standard form he definitely has a chance to break into the squad.

Looks like they've expanded the camp roster. 30 skaters + 5 goalies now. The other additional goalie besides Perhonen is Ullberg.

Perhonen and Ullberg are really strong additions in the net. I expect them to compete for the starting position.

That's just a preliminary entry list to the tournament. Here's the actual selection camp roster.

Are you sure Perhonen isn't there just for safety's sake, if for example one of the other 3 gets injured or something?

Why would they replace an injured goalie with another injured goalie?

Nah. If Perhonen is healthy, he's definitely contesting for a slot. Especially since his stats are pretty much interchangeable with Juvonen, if not slightly better. Since the netminder picks are our biggest question mark, Rindell would be pretty thick not to check all the options on the table.

Here's the good news...you probably are wrong

I get to watch Laurikainen a bunch and he is very consistent. Swift Current's record does not reflect Eetu's play. He's very athletic and intelligent, so don't let his numbers (which actually aren't awful) fool you.

He, along with Lowry (who should've been invited to Canada's camp IMO) are the best players on the Broncos.

Finland has practised with these lines:

Haapala-Barkov-Lehkonen
Aaltonen-Teräväinen-Ikonen
Leino-Granlund-Armia

4th line?

Hännikäinen/Nykopp-Mustonen-Lamberg

I think that Leino gets dropped from that line when Salomäki comes so the line should be Granlund-Salomäki-Armia. Try to figure out the 2 PP lines...

Apparently he had minor knee problems, but he’s at the camp now so I wouldn’t exactly call him injured. Your reasoning seems rational, I just wasn't sure whether he was there for real or as a backup, he was a late addition after all.

Those lines make sense. Haapala-Barkov-Lehkonen played together in Sweden, Aaltonen-Teräväinen-Ikonen played together in Lake Placid, and Granlund-Salomäki-Armia played together at the WU18C's.

They might go with 4 forwards in one of the PP units. Maybe something along these lines:

Salomäki-Granlund-Armia
Teräväinen-Ristolainen

Haapala-Barkov-Lehkonen
Määttä-Pokka
