Can one of our Canadians here answer this: if there was an NHL season, would Laughton be on the team? Or at least be in camp?
It's possible he'd be in camp if the NHL were playing. There are 4 or 5 forwards who wouldn't have been available to Hockey Canada, but there are also a lot of 19 year olds across the country who would be possible invites. As an 18 year old, he'd be a longshot to make the team.
Since the main boards seem impossible, I'll ask you kind objective folks. Do the Americans stand a chance to win this thing? Other than that, who looks to be the favorite going into the tournament? Apologies, I don't follow junior hockey as closely as I used to.

I think the Americans have a good shot at a medal and possibly getting the gold. A lot of people are saying it could depend on their goaltending and John Gibson has been playing really well coming into the tourney. They have some elite goal scorers in Galchenyuk and NJ native John Gaudreau. Also having potential number 1 pick Seth Jones on defense doesn't hurt.
Here's a look at the potential roster, taken from the WJC board

Thanks. It'll be interesting to see how things play out. Getting RNH on the team will definitely give the Canadians a huge boost going into the tournament as well.

I think this is Russia's tournament to lose. They're strong in every area, they're playing at home, on the larger ice and have dynamic scorers - perhaps the best one in the tournament.
The US will be in the mix for a medal, and Canada likely will as well.

Gibson hasn't played in a couple of weeks - hip flexor. I hear he's expected to be close to 100% when the WJC starts and if he can shed the rust quickly, he's a huge piece to the US team. The kid is fun to watch - SO calm, cool and collected. He doesn't get flustered.
OMG! Not Hyka! He's destined for NHL greatness because he looked ok in 2 NHL exhibition games!
You do realize he was drafted by the Kings?
In addition, had the Flyers been able to sign him, it would have been like getting a 4th-6th round pick for free. Some people had him going in the 3rd round. I'll take a free 3rd rounder any day.
You know what the Phantoms need? O.
You know what Hyka is? A "dynamic" offensive player limited by size (if you trust the scouting reports).
This Hyka sarcasm is silly. He may never be elite, or whatnot, but he's a decent prospect worth trying to develop. The Kings certainly think so. Last I checked, they're the champs.

and yet he went in the 6th round, with plenty of opportunities for the Flyers (or any other team) to take him before that

How is that relevant? He went in the 6th for a reason.

Gotcha. I forgot about it being in Russia, that'll definitely be good for them. As an American, I'll be pulling for them and Ghost in particular, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Canadians win it either.

Oshawa Generals season ticket holder here.
Laughton would have been on the team, or at least invited to camp, if it were not for his 10 game misconduct. He made a terrible head check and he paid for it. He'd be perfect in a 4th line role
i would expect canada, russia and us-eh should be in the mix. sweden comes from no-where and snags a medal, so i wouldnt take them lightly. canada has some offensive pop, some big boys on d. goalie, could be a strength or a weakness. what worries me most about team canada could be team chemistry. some games are on at 4 a.m. local time i think, 4 cases of monster energy should carry me through the games, have breakfast and back to bed for 4 hrs.
