To recap: Sloan started day with irrelevant scolding. Left Chambers for large chunk of discussion. Returns to delay relevant discussion.

Dan Tencer ‏@dantencer
Councillor Krushell does the right thing and calls Sloan on her earlier absence. Motion to postpone discussion does not pass.

Renovating Rexall was never an option after negotiations with Katz broke down.

BTW, Mandel had to step out, which leaves Linda Sloan as acting mayor. Which is making for an intriguing dynamic in here. #yegarena

This is what I thought as well (albeit it's not like I did a traffic study or something while I was there) although to be fair to him most trucks will likely be 1/2 tons and the diesel option isn't available is 1/2 tons. That said we have tons of 3/4 and 1 ton diesels here and we have MUCH smaller parking stalls than Edmonton does with the exception of Costco here.

lol, well it depends where your from. I always laugh when some one comes to Edmonton from rural Alberta. THey always comment that there are hardly any trucks.

Of course if you compare Edmonton to pretty much any major city in the world there are tons of trucks.

Between the Katz Group/Edmonton City Council pissing match and the NHL/NHLPA gong show we've got enough nonsensical disagreements going on here to last a lifetime.

IMO it's only going to get worse (politics and union/management negotiations).

I don't know that the arena is even that bad. Even Diotte had this to say

"We've got to get a good deal on a downtown arena. I support it, but the way this has gone on is not proper in my view," says Kerry Diotte

Just seems more that some council members have a personal vendetta against Katz and want to make things difficult for him.

Maybe you should get off the LRT and actually drive around for a while.

I'm surprised by how many people buy into that urban myth.

As a quick experiment I just looked out my window and counted 100 vehicles driving by.

Of those 100, 5 were pickups 0r 5%.

Of those 5, 2 were work trucks, 2 were small-sized, and one mid-sized Chevy.

Not a big gas guzzler among them.

A real Mecca.

What's your point exactly? That they shouldn't supply parking for large trucks?

There are clearly many people in Edmonton and elsewhere in Alberta that drive 3/4 ton trucks or larger and many that will frequent oiler games. There is no logical argument to the contrary.

What I want to know is whether or not Katz is still pushing his latest "fleece the taxpayer" deal, or if a more realistic proposal will come out of this.

Considering that Sloan acted extremely unprofessional and childish today by walking out of council that's an understatement to say the least.

Worth a mention as it comes up quite often.

I wasn't mentioning pickups at all.

I was commenting on Gibbons and his big diesel trucks comment.

He was being an obstructionist. Plain and simple. His comment reminded me of the Eastern media/liberal good-ol-boy-Albertans comments.

I tire of such stereotypes. Just like the one where if I have spent time living in Northern Alberta, then I think there are very few pickups on the road because of course that means I'm a yokel who has never really gone or lived anywhere else.

Hmmm I work downtown and just counted 6 trucks out of the 22 vehicles passing by.

About 27% there...

Anyone else see what i did there?
