I find Bauer to be incredibly overrated as a prospect...but that's still a steal for Cleveland.

Derek Jeter defensively? If so, my condolences to DBacks fans.

And his minor league career suggests he won't be a special hitter.

Gregorious was ranked 8 amongst Reds prospects btw.
Towers probably thinks that Jeter is a wiz defensively.

He's got a high ceiling. The odds of him reaching it are rock bottom low, but it's still high.

Kevin Towers is quickly turning a team with a bunch of young talent poised to compete for years into a team that has a good bullpen and that's it. And the bullpen may not even be good until Heath Bell is gone.

I still hope that we are looking at dealing Cabrera still. If we can trade Choo and net ourselves Bauer we could probably pick up another future ace for Cabrera. This should make signing Swisher a pretty big priority now though. Right now our outfield is among the worst in the history of baseball.

Brantley, an ok hitter
Stubbs, minor league player
Nobody

I just can't understand why Arizona would make this deal. First of all, there is no rationale for it. If you really are bent on trading a young starting pitcher with an incredibly high ceiling, you had better have serious justification for it. Bauer's potential is well-documented, but the fact that he is under team control for a long time makes their decision to trade him even more baffling. The Diamondbacks simply can't compete with the Dodgers and Giants financially; you would think that young pitchers of Bauer's caliber would be highly valuable to them. They obviously did not like Bauer's attitude about changing his routine. But that doesn't mean that they can justify trading him for a weak-hitting shortstop prospect that plays strong defense. Gregorius is certainly a brilliant defender, but his hitting is so weak that he probably will be nothing more than a 2 WAR player, maybe 3 at best. Bauer is likely a 4 WAR player, at very, very worst. With the ability to contend for Cy Youngs. I just can't wrap my head around this deal. The Reds got better (though Choo is potentially an adventure in CF), and the Indians made an absolute killing. Arizona just traded a young starter with legitmate ace potential for the prospect equivalent of Brandon Crawford. They got shafted.

If you talk to Kevin Towers about WAR, he probably engages in a conversation about the military.

Why didn't the Red just trade Gregorius for Bauer straight up? Seems kind of dumb to trade for only one year of Choo. And it would seem logical that a prospect like Bauer should be able to fetch more than one season of Choo in return. Plus, Stubbs isn't that terrible of a centerfielder.

Stubbs had an OPS of .610 last season. He strikes out way too much for a leadoff guy.

I agree that trading for a year of Choo is a bit questionable...but I don't think Cincinnati really overpaid for him.

You can strike out a lot and still be a good lead off hitter. The Reds' problem is that Dusty Baker is an idiot. His lead off and 2 hitters for most of last year was Drew Stubbs (.277 OBP) and Zack Cozart (.288 OBP). If they would have just went with something like Brandon Phillips leading off and Todd Frazier or Ryan Ludwick batting 2nd in front of Votto and Bruce they would've been better.

Choo helps their offense but they could've improved their offense by getting two awful OBP guys out of the 1/2 spots so Votto and Bruce could hit with runners on more often.

Hell they could've done this. Trade Gregorious for Bauer and then go with this lineup.

2B Phillips
3B Frazier
1B Votto
RF Bruce
LF Ludwick
CF Heisey
C Mesoraco/Hanigan
SS Cozart

Stubbs is a pretty good fielder out there in CF, IIRC. Choo, while he is a better hitter, probably loses some of his advantage over Stubbs because he's not as good of a CFer.

I get that Gregorius probably isn't a household name prospect by any stretch, but it did seem like he had a lot of trade value, since he was essentially traded for Trevor Bauer, who likely did have a lot of trade value. To give that up for one year of Choo, and playing him out of position wasn't a wise move, imo. They should have gone after Chris Young, who was only traded for a very light hitting SS.
