I don't think many will dispute that Luongo is a great goalie... simple fact is that he's a top starter in the NHL and would help any team make the playoffs. Not a stretch to say he'd make a borderline team into a playoff team.
His contract and playoff "choke" reputation are what kills the deal though.
I don't think age is a huge factor really... plenty of goalies play into their late 30's and still play well... Brodeur, Thomas, Roloson.... list goes on. Goalies actually "ripen" later and often don't burn out quite as fast as forwards. It all depends on the player of course but I don't see why you couldn't legitimately expect another 5+ solid years out of Luongo. Of course he's got 10 years left on the contract which is the obvious problem. To say he wouldn't immediately help the Oilers have a better shot at the playoffs though is being biased. He's certainly a step up from Dubnyk/Khabi.
I still don't want him because of the contract length and price but just based purely on his abilities he'd obviously be a benefit to the team.
One can only hope Ryan O'Rielly signing for 2 years with Magnitotorsk causes some drama with the Avs so that they drive him out of town and we can swoop in and grab him. Would be a perfect solution for our number 2C. 99,9 % sure it'll never happen but a boy can dream right.
Well Av fans will probably tell you it's not a big deal, but how many other players have been going to Europe and signing multi-year deals?
It's odd to say the less. It could just be a ploy or maybe there is more to the story. There were rumblings that Duchene wasn't happy and I heard something in regards to O'Reilly but I can't remember what it was now.
I will say this though, the only real issue the Avs have is they might have to trade him. But I doubt is value is all that low on the trade market. They should be able to get market value for him.

As far as I know, the NHL - KHL transfer agreement goes both ways. Given that he doesn't have an NHL contract, is he stuck in Magnitotorsk for 2 years now?
If so, this is delightful news. Colorado just got significantly worse.

From what I saw on the main board a two-year deal probably means he is stuck, but I'm sure there is some sort of out.

Unless he has some buy out clause for the Avs to get him back, I think he is.
Listening to C.Armstrong yesterday really makes you think about how lucky some of these guys are. I mean that is if you actually like your brother. Chance of a life time for some of these guys. Even though Colby is only two years older than his brother, they've never been together. Although Colby isn't playing just yet.
Looks like a fairly balanced team. I look forward to seeing Yak play as much as the next guy, but he would be needed to help acquire both Yandle and Hanzal.

^^ I like, but I doubt Sharks deal Clowe for anything less than one of Ebs/Hall/RNH/Schultz. He's one of their corner stones and he won't be traded unless they get one back, and a 3rd & 4th line LW ain't enough unless we send our 1st rounder.

Reading the forums after last season, I'd say you might be off the mark on that one.
He isn't going to be free, but he's hardly untouchable.
I'm usually bad at proposals but here's a couple I thought up while bored...
Hanzal
Yandle
Pick?
for
Yakupov
Gagner

Hell yes! Me want. Hanzal would be perfect and Yandle would be awesome too (less pressure on J.Schultz, Marincin, Klefbom). Yakupov is nice but we have enough firepower up front.
Would you guys swap Paajarvi for Niño from the Islanders? Struggling prospect for struggling prospect?
Niedereitter was drafted higher than Paajarvi, is a higher rated prospect, and is over a point-per-game in the AHL with 11 goals while leading Bridgeport in scoring (compared to Paajarvi's 3 goals).
I've never been as high on Niedereitter as some (I still question His long-term offensive upside) but the Islanders would be really silly to make that move.
The time to do the Nino for MPS trade was last year... when both were ******** the bed. That exact trade was brought up during last season but I think that ship has long since sailed. MPS could still pan out but getting something decent for him at this stage is hopeful imo.
I wonder what it would take to get Andrej Sekera from Buffalo? (if the lockout ever ends)
The Sabres have an abundance of D-man(either currently or ready for some NHL minutes) and could use some help up front.
The guys a solid top-4 defensive D imo. Played decent minutes at both ES and SH and held his own. He's also only 26.
Smid-Petry
Schultz-Schultz
Sekera-Whitney
Injury prone, below average shot blocker, and not that physical, not what the Oilers are looking for. I would say their looking more for a RHS physical D and Sekera is definitely not that. He's also over paid to be a 3rd pairing D, cap hit may only be 2.75M, but his salary is 3M+.
