RIT haven't been this bad since my senior year. At least that season had a built-in excuse since it was their first at the D-I level.

NIAGARA UNIV., NY – The Niagara Purple Eagles remain unbeaten in Atlantic Hockey play with the 3-0 shutout victory over the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday evening at Dwyer Arena. The Purple Eagles (8-2-3; 7-0-0 AHA) have played to four straight victories on home-ice, including blanking their opponents in the previous three matchups to set an NU record, beginning with the 5-0 shutout against the UConn Huskies on Nov.2

NU goaltender Carsen Chubak has played in every minute of those games, not allowing a goal in 185.40 minutes of play at Dwyer. Chubak registered 43 saves, one shy of his career. The junior currently leads the nation with five shutouts, and is ranked first in the nation in goal-against average (0.99) and save percentage (.970).

The Purple Eagles will have a week off before returning to the ice against Sacred Heart in a two-game series at Dwyer Arena. The first contest will take place on Friday, Nov. 30, with the second coming the following day. The puck will drop for both games at 7:05 pm ET.

Men's Hockey Cracks into National Rankings - http://www.purpleeagles.com/news/201...119124828.aspx

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – After dropping a pair of Atlantic Hockey opponents this past weekend to remain undefeated in conference play, the Niagara men’s hockey team garnered national attention as the Purple Eagles were slated in the 20th spot in the USCHO.com Division I Poll.

The previously unranked Purple Eagles (8-2-3; 7-0-0 AHA) enter the ranking at No. 20 with 112 votes during the week of Nov. 19 after becoming the fifth team in the nation to register eight wins, joining Boston College, Denver, Notre Dame and New Hampshire.

Niagara’s inclusion on the USCHO.com poll is the first time the Purps have been ranked in the online poll since March 24, 2008 when the team was slated 19th. The Purple Eagles were ranked in the top-20 for 10 weeks during that season, with their highest ranking coming in at 17. Niagara wrapped up the 2007-08 campaign slated in the 19th position with a 22-10-4 record while earning a trip to the 2008 NCAA Tournament for the third time in the program’s history.

Went to RIT/Clarkson last night. Clarkson had a pretty big contingent on hand as I'm assuming a lot of local kids home on break went to the game. They had part of their pep band there and made enemies pretty early on when they tried playing over the RIT pep band the first 4 or 5 times the RIT band tried playing anything. Plus they had one obnoxious kid who wouldn't shut up all game long.

But anyways, as far as the game, it ended in a pretty disappointing 3-3 tie. I hate ties. Clarkson dominated the first half of the 1st period, then once RIT started to gain momentum and carry the play in the second half of the 1st, Clarkson scored two shorties. The final few minutes of the game offered some excitement and RIT had a goal-mouth scramble with under 15 seconds to go. Middle chunk of the game was rather slow. Both teams had struggled to keep the puck out of their net all season (RIT allowing 4.5 goals against/game) but both goalies played pretty well.

Pretty disappointing season for RIT thus far.

No. 13/13 Cornell Men's Hockey Takes Bite Out of Michigan at Frozen Apple -

NEW YORK Ė The first edition of The Frozen Apple proved a night to remember for the men's hockey team as it recorded its highest scoring effort of the season and got its first victory at Madison Square Garden since 1976 with a 5-1 win against Michigan on Saturday night.

In front of a largely pro-Cornell sellout crowd of 18,200, the Big Red offense got a goal in the first period from Joel Lowry, two goals and an assist from Greg Miller and a 26-save effort from junior Andy Iles. No. 13/13 Cornell (4-3-2) had not won in its three previous contests at Madison Square Garden, but the team knocked off No. 19 Michigan (5-7-1) by bettering the 3-2 win it put forth in the NCAA Tournament against the Wolverines in March.

Besides Miller and Lowry, Big Red freshman Teemu Tittinen also struck for his first career goal in his second game. The Big Red's other goal came from senior center Erik Axell, and Michigan's lone goal in the third period came too late to threaten a Cornell team that was already ahead by four at that point.

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara men’s hockey head coach David Burkholder achieved a career milestone with his 200th win on Friday evening, after No. 20 Niagara dropped the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 5-3 victory at Dwyer Arena.

The 2012-13 season marks Burkholder’s 12th season as benchboss, and 17th season with the program. Through 12 campaigns with the Purple Eagles, Burkholder’s 200 wins include two CHA Tournament Championships, two CHA regular-season titles, a pair of CHA Coach of the Year selections and two trips to the NCAA postseason.

“It’s just a number,” said Burkholder of his accomplishment. “I haven’t really thought about it. It’s all about the players and the streak they’re on, still being undefeated in Atlantic Hockey. The milestone says that that I’ve had some unbelievable assistant coaches and some great players have come through the program. I’m very lucky in both regards.”

The top line of Giancarlo Iuorio, Marc Zanette and Ryan Murphy combined for eight points in the victory, including notching four of the Purple Eagles’ five tallies. Iuorio snapped home two goals for the game to increase his season total to a team-leading 11 goals. Murphy contributed a goal and two assists, while Zanette added his third score of the season along with a helper.

Storrs, Conn. - Junior goaltender Tony Capobianco recorded 36 saves to earn his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory for the Canisius College hockey team on Friday night at Connecticut. With the win, the Griffs improve to 4-6-4 on the season and 3-2-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while the Huskies drop to 4-6-1 and 3-5-0 against league foes.

"We played very well tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "We had excellent goaltending and got a huge power-play goal late in the game. In a chippy contest, it sends a message to be ready for tomorrow for another intense battle."

Sophomore Logan Roe matched a career high with two points, netting his first collegiate goal to go along with an assist. Junior Kyle Gibbons and senior Preston Shupe also tallied goals for the Griffs in the winning effort.

Canisius waiting for its reward for offensive progress -
By Chris Lerch - Atlantic Hockey Columnist - USCHO.com - Nov. 29, 2012.

The Canisius Golden Griffins are doing what any coach wants at this point in the season: getting better game by game.

Dave Smith’s squad had a better record at this point last season (4-1-2) than it currently does (2-2-2) but this year it looks like there’s more upside to the Griffs’ chances, especially if a struggling offense can produce to complement the Canisius defense, which is ranked eighth nationally.

“I’ve liked the way we’ve played,” Smith said. “We’ve done a good job defensively. On offense there are a lot of things that we’ve been working on and are doing right but we haven’t been rewarded.”

#8 Union shutout at home by #16 Quinnipiac, 4-0. Host unranked Princeton tonite.

Schedule gets harder from here on out, thought this team would struggle a little bit more than they have, but theyre going to have to get a lot better if they want to get into the tourny again.

Pretty good game for RIT. The shot total looked one-sided, but RIT did a much better job preventing odd man rushes and protecting the slot than they had been early in the season. And both of Lynch's goals were sick. Great play by Schuler to force the turnover inside the blue line and keep the puck in for a breakaway on the first one, and just a snipe on one of the best statistical goaltenders in the nation on the 2nd.

They had a couple of other glorious empty net chances go begging as well.

Vote Carsen Chubak & Giancarlo Iuorio for the Hobey Baker Award -

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Center Giancarlo Iuorio and goaltender Carsen Chubak are among 77 initial candidates on the fan ballot for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the nation's best player in NCAA Division I men's college hockey. Fans can vote once per every 24 hours through March 10, 2013 for Iuorio and Chubak.

Chubak anchors Niagara’s defense, which ranks ninth in the nation, allowing 1.46 goals-per game which is good enough for second in the country. Leading the Purps to a No. 17 national ranking and an 11-3-4 overall record, Chubak ranks first in the nation in save percentage .954 and shutouts (5). Starting in all but two games over the last 17 games, he is a five-time Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week this season and was the AHA Goalie of the Month for October and November.

Iuorio, who serves as the team’s assistant captain, has played a pivotal role in the NU offense. The two-time AHA Player of the Week and Player of the Month for November is tied for third in the nation in goals (12), and goals-per game (0.67). His 1.11 points-per game places him 24th in the nation, while his four power-play tallies slates him in the 22nd spot. He became the first Purple Eagle to net three consecutive 20 point season since Egor Mironov and Chris Moran achieved it during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 season, while he is only 12 points away from joining the 100-point club that only 13 Purple Eagles have attained.

Capobianco Listed on Hobey Baker Ballot -

Fans can vote for the player they believe deserves the award by visiting hobeybaker.com and clicking the Vote for Hobey icon. The first phase ends March 10 and the list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists with the second phase beginning on March 22.

Capobianco is enjoying one of the best seasons in the country this season. The anchor of the nation's fifth-ranked scoring defense, Capobianco places seventh in Division I with a .939 save percentage plus 10th with 1.86 goals against average. Both numbers rank first in the program's record book, surpassing the current marks set by Sean Weaver in 1999-00 (.927 save percentage and 2.37 goals against average).

Canisius' Conacher gets huge shot with Lightning - January 15, 2013 - By Mike Harrington - BuffaloNews.com

Former Canisius College star Cory Conacher had a big day Monday at Tampa Bay Lightning camp playing left wing on a line with one of his idols, Bolts center Vinny Lecavalier. Conacher has 12 goals and 28 points in 36 games this season for Syracuse and is one of just two AHL players in Tampa Bay's camp. Barring something unforeseen, he's making the team. Especially since he was AHL MVP last year with 39 goals and 80 points in 75 games for Norfolk, which rolled to a Calder Cup title.

Click on the link below for a videotape interview with Cory Conacher:

Good luck to Cory this NHL season - well unless hes playing against the Sabres!

NHL pedigree runs helps Chris Kaleta at Cortland... is a USCHO article on Kaleta's younger brother, who's the senior captain at Cortland. It also notes that Derek Patterson, captain of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and son of Sabres alum Colin Patterson, has committed to Plattsburgh. Both schools are in the SUNYAC (D-III).
