I'm impartial here, but I can't see how (considering this proposal was made by an Oilers fan) Detroit, at the very least, doesn't consider this.

The Oilers lack depth at centre and Detroit needs help on the blue line.So really it's a win-win.

As an Oiler fan I'd do this. Value wise we lose, but we painfully need a bottom-6 forward with Helm's checking ability.

Whitney puts up 50 in Detroit

Yeah, I agree.

I'm sure some Oilers fans are going to say: "He's been hurt, his value when healthy is way higher", and some Wings fans will say "Helm is an unsung hero, does all the right things"... but the trade really does help both teams.

Detroit has an entire farm system stocked with forward prospects who will be chomping at the bit for an NHL role real soon, and Edmonton... well, they're run and gun for a reason. Defensive forwards can't hurt (no offense).

Then I propose this...

To Detroit: Schultz
To Edmonton: Emmerton

We need D you need C, fair right?

Hardly.

The gap between Helm and Whitney is miniscule compared to the gap between Schultz and Corey freaking Emmerton.

I think the value is fair, but Detroit doesn't do it. Helm has those intangibles you just don't let go of.

naaa...on second thought, we'll keep Schultz...Emmerton is a minor leaguer that we just don't need.

Besides the fact that Whitney is a UFA in 1 year and Helm is locked up for the next 4 years the value is fair but the Wings easily say no. Helm is with Datsyuk, Kronwall, Zetterberg & Kronwall in the untouchable list. He's been called the best 3rd line center by Holland and Babcock so I don't see them moving him for anything that would be realistically offered for him.

^besides, i see Whitney signing in another city other than Detroit when he's a UFA....the Oilers likely won't try to re-sign him.

I don't see how this helps Edmonton. They've got Gagner, Hopkins and Horcoff. Helm isn't a 4th line center. At the same time this leaves yet another hole in Edmonton's blueline.

Detroit needs defensive help in defence. Ryan Whitney is not an answer for that.

Well that might not be a bad trade considering Emmerton might be moved for pucks.

No offense to Oilers fans, but if Helm gets moved it's going to be as a package for a defender who's a lot better than Whitney.

Overall, I'm just not seeing Edmonton and Detroit as good trading partners. They both have the same need.

Helm may not have top-six skill, but he is very, very valuable to the Wings. As such, I would expect that Holland would want a premium return for him. He really does drive the bus for the team, even from the third line. When Helm plays well, the wings play well. When Helm doesn't play well, the wings don't look good. I know that all teams have particular players like this and they aren't necessarily the star players.

It's not a bad proposal, value is there.

But we need more help on defensive side Whitney is getting up there in age and is pending UFA.

Wings don't want offensive Dmen. See: Kronwall, White, Quincey, Colaiacovo, Kindl, Smith.

I gotta agree with the other Wings fans that Helm is too valued by the Wings organization to be moved, unless it's a total 1-sided trade in Detroit's favour.
Also, I'd rather not acquire a D-man without moving a D-man, cause 8 D-men would automatically put Smith or Kindl in GR because they are the only one with 2 way contracts.

Just an FYI but two way contracts do not mean they can be sent down. Kindl would have to pass through waivers.

No way from the Wings.

No offense to Whitney, but how does he help the Wings at all? Especially at the cost of one of their more important forwards.

Thanks for the info. That would make the trade that much worse cause Smith would be sent to GR and Kindl would be relegated to the 7th spot.
