If I'm Baie-Comeau (or any other team) and some 16 year old diva refused to report, I'd have let him play Junior A or NCAA. They did get a pretty good return though, so at least they were able to use their asset...
Why only Halifax or Rimouski? I bet his development would have been severely hindered by having to play for Saint John last year, or having to play under the tutelage of André Tourigny, Patrick Roy, Benoît Groulx, or Eric Veilleux (the reigning Memorial Cup coach under whom he'd be playing right now).
I think he felt that a player of his talent deserves to play for his hometown team (thus presenting him with the least amount of personal inconvenience) and would have begrudgingly went to Crosby's old team.
