Holy crap. I mean that line is ridiculous, but in 3 years they could be paying nearly 100M to 4 players in their mid 30's(Pujols, Weaver, Wilson and Hamilton).

I wonder what overall percentage of salary in the MLB is tied up between the two LA teams

They'll be a fun team next year though. Still need pitching but they should be a fun team. Good thing Hamilton can play DH if need be though.

What is going in LA recently is getting ridiculous. I'm a Rangers fan (since well before it was cool). I would have never given him 5 years. Have fun with all the excuses (too much caffeine, too bright outside, quit dipping, relapse...etc).

5 years for Hamilton? Hah...have fun with that, Anaheim.

I think that this is an awful deal, the Angels would be lucky to get 2 seasons of 150+ games out of this 5 year commitment. But while Hamilton's healthy, that is one scary lineup.

What do the Rangers do now? I think they were prepared to lose Hamilton, but not to their chief rival...

Well, not just Hamilton. Napoli, Young.

Next season probably would be a year off but they would be fine long term with Yu, Harrison, Olt, Profar, Kinsler and Beltre.

The Rangers are still going to make a big deal this offseason. I still view them as the class of the West, unless the Angels get someone's number two SP in a trade.

Getting rid of Young is a huge positive. He was basically the worst position player in baseball last year.

I wouldnt mind them going after Swisher and Sanchez now, as long as they can get them on reasonable contracts. Just dont panic and overpay a free agent or in a trade. If that means winning 80-85 games next year, but keeping our fantastic farm system intact, then so be it.

Good friend on HF who passed away a few months ago was big Rangers fan and was big Hamilton fan, said it was important to lock Hamilton up long-term

Didn't like Angels

If he was still with us today he'd be sad

This got personal.

It got personal, and it got ugly, and for the next half-decade, as Josh Hamilton wears a Los Angeles Angels uniform and faces the Texas Rangers 19 games every season, the malice will not abate. Welcome to baseball's best new rivalry: Angels vs. Rangers, neither of whom Wednesday acted like their nicknames might suggest.

Los Angeles played the gunslinger, swooping in to steal Hamilton away with a five-year, $125 million contract the club hopes will change the landscape of the American League West in a way that the $300 million-plus invested last year in Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson didn't. And the Rangers were more like seraphs, playing innocent to everything, miffed at how it unfolded, curious why they didn't at least get a phone call from Hamilton's agents with a chance to match like Hamilton said so often he would give them.

I don't know if they will or not, but they'll be a good team. Even with the loss of McCarthy, the SP's are very good and the bullpen is the best in the division.

Angels don't have great pitching currently and Texas is having a bad offseason. I wouldn't be surprised if Oakland won the west again.

Depends if Oakland is able to repeat what they did last season, which is far from a given.

It's possible it will be a three team race but I'd still consider it Anaheim and Texas with the Rangers in front at the end.

I don't understand this deal whatsoever for Anaheim. Even if it hurts a division rival..

I'm just glad this wasn't the Tigers who did this.

It's far from a given that any team repeats their success from the previous season, but what Oakland has that other teams don't is quality pitching and tons of depth.

They were beyond terrible hitting for the first 2 months and got better when Moss got called up. I don't think they'll hit for the same power they did in the final 3 months, but odds are they'll be much better than they were when they were shut out in 12 of the first 55 games.

Didn't want a chance for the Angels to reconsider the ridiculous dumbass offer.

I also wonder if this makes the Phillies consider Swisher now. They wanted Hamilton, but maybe a ~55M contract for Swisher won't be that bad for the same time frame?

Seems like they're just printing money out in LA for both teams. Angels gave Hamilton a few years too many but that lineup looks ridiculous on paper.

A desperate signing by a team desperate to get back into the playoffs.

The contract will eventually appear on the worst contracts of all time list.
