Lets Trade with the (Virtual) Quebec Nordique

Not too long ago, HockeyNews did a mock expansion draft lead by none other than Jacques Demers...

http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...decisions.html

http://hfboards.hockeysfuture.com/sh....php?t=1300175

here is the projected line-up....

Gagne-Horcoff-Bourque
Kulemin-Peverly-Cleary
Paille-Stajan-Fiddler
Carcillo-Steckel-Beagle
Reasoner

Zidlicky-Kaberle
Colaiacovo-Bergeron
Russell-Komisarek
Demers-O'Byrne

Luongo
Biron
Neuvirth

And lets say Quebec would hold the 1st or 2nd overall in the next draft (randomly choose between Quebec and the Second Toronto Franchise.)

So i am waiting for your proposal
Open to anything but my most valuable asset would be my 1st draft pick 2013.

That's one awful team. Horcoff as the 1C?

The only players of any value is Kulemin, Neuvirth, Demers, Peverly. Have fun trying to trade any others.

i want Gomez!

he would help me get to the cap floor without paying $ the full cap hit, and i have other bad contract player to give in return.

I don't believe for a moment the Leafs would expose Kuleman, but I'll ignore that and say we will give you Bozak and 3rd for Biron.

I would do it.

Unless i have an interesting offer for Luongo.....

But please, can we keep Luongo out of this thread ?

Can we really? Or is it out of this reality?

Here was the leafs expansion protection list by THN:

Toronto Maple Leafs (one goalie)
Forwards: Bozak, Frattin, Grabovski, Kadri, Kessel, Lupul, MacArthur, Van Riemsdyk, McClement
Defensemen: Gardiner, Gunnarsson, Holzer, Liles, Phaneuf
Goalies: Reimer

and reasoning

Quote:
TORONTO: The Maple Leafs haven’t enjoyed much success since the 2004-05 lockout ended, but just because they haven’t made the playoffs in eight years doesn’t mean GM Brian Burke wouldn’t face some difficult expansion draft scenarios. On the one hand, Toronto’s lack of a veteran goalie made it easy to protect just one netminder. But when it came to their current collection of forwards, the answer wasn’t nearly so easy. The off-season acquisition of former Flyers James van Riemsdyk made that decision more difficult and it came down to these questions for the final couple spots: would you protect Nazem Kadri? Clarke MacArthur? Tyler Bozak? None of those players would necessarily be top-tier talent on other teams, yet there was an overwhelming sense among THN staffers all three of those players would be snapped up in an expansion draft. In the end, we felt the Buds would grit their teeth and leave 26-year-old winger Nikolai Kulemin (a 30-goal-scorer in 2010-11 who struggled mightily last season) unprotected.

LOL McClement over Kulemin?!?!?!?

It was a reasonably interesting concept for THN but they really botched the protected lists.

Bruins would never protect Greg Campbell over Rich Peverley.

Can we protect one less defenseman and get Luongo back?

according to the last expansion draft rules, if you protect 2 goalies, you can only protect 7 forwards instead of 9 and 3 defensemen instead of 5.

The last time there was an expansion draft, there were trades going on at the same time. Let's just pretend that some of the selections that we disagree with are because of some sort of Expansion Draft Day trades.

Maybe Quebec traded a future pick or something to Boston in return for not protecting Peverly. Maybe a player who was selected was then immediatley traded for Kulemin.

That way we can keep the tread on topic, rather than complain about the THN selections.

No reason to offer because no way in hell we let Kuli go over McClement...

Just throwing this out there, but Edmonton wouldn't protect Belanger over Horcoff, and I don't see why they'd bother protecting Potter, he's kinda useless.

You should fix the Quebec team. The protected lists aren't very realistic. If you're going to do this, might as well do it as correctly as you can.

Like, we could say that maybe by some fluke some star player is unprotected.

- Kulemin
+ McClement

- Peverley
+ Campbell

- Gange
+ Lewis

- Horcoff
+ Belanger

But then you would have to protect whoever you get for him unless its prospect/pick.

here was Vancouver protection list:

Vancouver Canucks (one goalie)
Forwards: Booth, Burrows, Hansen, Higgins, Kassian, Kesler, Raymond, D. Sedin, H. Sedin,
Defensemen: Bieksa, Edler, Garrison, Hamhuis, Tanev
Goalies: Schneider

And take note that Bernier was drafted first in this mock draft by the Toronto team and Luongo second.

but there was also another team (a second Toronto team) drafting, so i am not sure it could work.

As far as the OP's question goes, this is a pretty fun idea.

I would imagin that you could get a few cap dump players that could contribute pretty easily. Someone like Leino or Tim Connolly would be on the top two lines on this team, and come for pretty close to free.

The biggest issue is the defense on that team is a disaster. You could get some of the Blackhawks bottom pairing guys like Montador, Oduya or Roszival cheap enough. But what you really need is someone who can log huge minutes as a stand in #1D.

Are they allowed to take prospects? If they could that would be the much smarter way to go imo. That Quebec team would never make the playoffs anyways so they would just to the same place either way.
