Caps don't exactly have top six pieces to spare right now. If Ribeiro extends and other guys step up and lay claim to long term roles on scoring lines in Washington, there could be potential there. But right now we need Johansson more than we need Hjalmarsson.

here's very likely the reality. the caps will apply hamrlik's % cap hit to a replacement short term veteran that will be plugged into hamrlik's spot in the lineup.

johansson is a player that is already overperforming his salary and cap hit. for those reasons alone he is going to stay. ribiero is a short timer and will very likely not be kept.
my guess would be that the plan was to have johansson back at center after ribiero's contract expired and replace johansson's wing position with kuznetsov or forsberg.

If you take on some salary... Maybe. Add a pick?

Stalberg, Pirri/Kruger, Hjarmalsson for Johansson, Schultz. Though I'd be hesitant even with that unless we get Weiss/Zajac in FA somehow.

Dumping Hamrlik makes no sense. We're not at the cap right now and he'll be gone next year. Schultz is a whole different story.

Why would we want to add a guy who threw his entire Association under the bus? ..a guy who nobody would protect, not to mention a guy who doesnt help our team one bit?

If Ribeiro signs an extension, that deal could have legs. Don't see Washington doing it if Ribeiro has the ability to walk away after this season.

Because that guy is a UFA and you'd have him for a grand total of nothing? That was just BHF trying to tilt the deal in your favor.

Schultz is the salary dump we'd want to sent back, and probably get a medium level center prospect for insurance (Kruger or Pirri). With Toews, Johansson, Bolland, Teravainen, Shaw, Hayes, McNeil, Danault and whoever is left of Pirri/Kruger I'd imagine it wouldn't be much of a hindrance. Holy **** do you have a lot of centers.

Stalberg is hardly the throw in BWC treats him as. If he's involved, I'd want a mid round pick coming back to us, not the other way around.

Nobody said he was a throw in. You're trading for a productive top 6 player with boatloads of potential on an ELC (or cheap 2nd contract thanks to the lockout) in Johansson. Hjalmarsson isn't exactly on a sweetheart deal and Stalberg is about to become a UFA.

You assume the new contract will be cheap, and trust me on BWC's view of Stalberg.

Well, given that Stalberg might not play another game before he becomes a UFA, he is pretty much a throw in at this point. Even if the season resumes, he's only a rental.

And if there's no season this year, Johansson simply doesn't have the numbers or leverage to get a high priced contract at this point. Only way it's not cheap is if you go for a longer term "pay for potential" type deal, and even then it has the potential to be a steal.

Yeah, didn't know Stalberg was a UFA after this year... No to Hjalmarsson + Stalberg for Johansson. Though Hjalmarsson + is a good basis.

Stalberg is better than any other + Chicago would be willing to give on top of Hjalmarsson.

His UFA rights aren't.

We're not exactly dying to get rid of a 22 year old 2C with excellent hockey sense and gamebreaking speed who will only get better and better.

If we are legitimately pursuing Hjarmalsson it would be with futures. Johansson is involved if the package coming back is worth getting him involved. That would be a fair bit on top of Hjarmalsson.

What Halpysback said and don't forget that Johansson still has 3 or so years with <3M cap hit. One on the current contract and at least two more on the next deal.
