Dave Cameron had him pegged for 5/75 well before FA
It makes far more sense for Detroit than Chicago seeing as the Tigers are a contender and are trying to win now. Especially with an owner willing to pay than one being on a budget.
In addition, most players will be overpaid in FA and that won't change as salaries continue to rise. Same thing happens every year when the NHL actually has a season.
I just didn't think Detroit would be able to sign him. But I'm glad they did and this will eventually lead to Porcello being traded.
Also makes me feel better about shipping off Jacob Turner.
He fits a need, for sure, but 16/yr for Anibal Sanchez just makes me laugh.
He and his agent simply used the Cubs as leverage to get what they could out of the Tigers, and it looks like it added an extra million onto each season. I guarantee he never had any intentions of signing in Chicago.
Seeing as he was shooting for 6/90, he simply wanted to be paid and Detroit knew that. But he did want to return to Detroit as well..which they knew and they wanted him back.
Probably helped that not only him but Dombrowski were upfront with what each other was looking for after they lost to San Francisco. But I never believed their original offer of 4/48 was actually real either. If they "lowballed" that bad he would have pulled a Josh Hamilton and never gave them the last word.
If Illitch didn't want to win so bad, they probably balk and let him go. But with him getting older and a new TV deal on the horizon, what the hell?
There is certainly some risk to it but also a lot of positives.
