If the cap drops to $60 million, the Sharks will need to move a player or two

What do people think of...

Dan Boyle (6.67m)

for

Carl Hagelin (875,00)
Brian Boyle (1.70m)
Anton Stralman (1.70m)

All feedback is welcome

I think Rangers say no pretty easily. Giving up way too much to address an area that isn't even a need.

Pretty sure the Rags will also have to shed some salary to be at a comfortable spot. Theyd decline this.

RH PPQB and PMD has been a need since they traded Zubov....

With a player like Boyle, the Rangers defense has zero holes imo.

If the cap drops to 60 M, the Rangers are in no position to be acquiring high salary players by giving up their depth players on cheap contracts and ELCs.

Seems like an awful lot to give up for a defenseman that has 1-2 years left at best because he has slowed noticeably in the last 2yrs.

How has he slowed noticeably? He has had 50 and 48 points the last 2 years.

I've seen worse proposals, but the Rangers can't afford to take on any salary. They are going to be screwed next year when their ELC's start expiring. We're likely going to have to dump Gaborik.

Well, my guess is that it would be predicated on the Rangers wanting to win the Stanley Cup thingamajig in the next 1-2 years.

We likely already have to give up Gaborik likely next year just to pay our RFAs. This IS the year we have a good chance.

If we get Boyle this year, we can't keep him nor Gaborik for next year. What's the point?

I don't know much about the Rangers' cap situation, but I'm thinking the point would be to win the Stanley Cup.

What the hell are you talking about? You realize we are talking about Dan Boyle, right?

Last three playoffs:
  • 2 points in 5 games
  • 16 points in 18 games
  • 14 points in 15 games

TOI/G ranking the last three regular seasons:
  • 7th
  • 2nd
  • 4th

Unless your definition of slowed is going from top-5 to top-10 in ice time after the team brings in a second #1 defenseman, it's clear you're making an assumption based on his age.

He had 14pts in 15 games during the 09-10 playoffs and 16pts in 18 games during 10-11 playoffs. He has 58pts in 89 playoff games overall. He is only 36 and will likely be good until he is 40 like Rafalski and Niedermeyer since he is a similar defenseman too them.

Too much money to take on without sending a significant amount back. That and the fact that Hags and Boyle are two important pieces of our top-9, and I'm not crazy about sacrificing depth for a "nice to have" piece. I'd rather see if Del Zotto and McDonagh can continue to take steps forward offensively.

Boyle is a PPG defenseman every year in playoffs.

Too much of our depth goes away in that trade

Not worth the cap hit considering how good our defense is already.

Sorry now guys . Yous don't have to get all excited. I just thought i read reports where injuries and age slowed him and that his playoffs this year were not great. If you look at his points per game in this years playoffs, i think it calculates at 5games and 2pts = .4pts per game.

Considering that the Sharks scored a total of 8 goals in the entire playoffs, that's really nothing to scoff at. At the beginning of the year, yes, he had a broken foot, but besides that he has been playing at the same caliber as always. If I were the Rangers, I'd probably turn this down, but not because of Boyle.

Boyle broke his foot early in the season, played through it, and still put up nearly 50 points from the back end.

And despite 2 points in 5 games this last postseason, he still approached a point per game pace the previous 2. With Lidstrom retired and Pronger likely out too, Boyle is now the game's premier playoff performing defenseman.

He is getting up there in age and his salary is high. I certainly understand Ranger fan's concerns and disapproval of this trade, but he's still one hell of a player and would be a MASSIVE boost to any team in the Cup hunt.
