To Wpg: Chris Stewart & Alex Steen | To Stl: Evander Kane
This is bad for Winnipeg. Stewart and Kane have somewhat similar potential, with Kane's being higher, but at this point Stewart has far too many question marks regarding his work ethic. Steen while a great player, is a lot more easily replaceable than a guy like Kane and they could add a guy who's somewhat similar through free agency or a cheaper trade without sacrificing a potential franchise winger. Doesn't make sense to downgrade from Kane to a high risk in Stewart just to add Steen.
I know I'm going to be flamed for it but I would rather keep Steen and see if Stewart comes back from his one bad yr. I know Kane has great potential but Steen is a hell of an all around forward and we know what Stewart can do. If we were trading two wingers we would probably want a center or d-man anyways.
Stewart has a better G/Game for his career than Kane.
Steen is one of the best two-way forwards on a team filled with solid two-way forwards.
Kane is the best player in the deal going forward.
The difference in Kane's potential and Stewart's potential going forward is not Alex Steen. Probably closer to a second.
Pass from the Blues.
(And save your typing about Stewart scoring 15 to Kane's 30 last season by checking out the two season's before that.)
First off, it's very, very close, .302 to .295 goals per game by my math, hardly worth pointing out.
Secondly, Stewart played 2 years in the AHL, and had his first taste of the NHL at age 21. Kane was thrown into the fire in Atlanta at age 18.
Kane hasn't even played as a 21 year old yet, and has a 30 goal season, while Stewart does not. I get your point, but lets compare apples to apples here. Kane's potential is much greater than Stewarts. At 20, Stewart was putting up 25 goals in the AHL, while Kane potted 30 in the NHL.
The value is undoubtedly in the Blues favour here, by a good margin as well. I still doubt that I make the deal as a Blues fan though, it just doesn't make much sense.
Doesnt really fill a need for us, but Kane is one of my favorite players. As much as I hate to lose Steen Id probably do this deal. Doubtful the Jets would though.
I like this deal for the Jets. They get two quality young players and they lack depth as it is. Plus, I don't see Kane as a 50 goal scorer. I see him as a 30 goal scorer. Stewart can be close to that and Steen is the best player in this deal IMO.

You have got to be joking me.
Kane will at least become a 40g scorer, and is definitely the best player in this deal.

I think Kane has the highest upside of the three. He's 5 yrs younger then Stewart and imo the more consistent, harder worker of the 2.
If I was a Jets fan, I'd be unhappy with this trade.
Yeah, I'm not living under a rock. I am aware of what people think Kane "will be".
He hasn't even played in his peak years, and he potted 30g playing second line minutes with sub par line mates. Your going to tell me that playing on the first line, with a good player shovelling him passes he wont become a forty goal scorer? He also had thirty goals after missing a chuck of time.
Its called extrapolation. Its really not that hard. You can throw quotations around "will be" until the cows come home, but you have yet to actually say one thing thats actually well thought out. There is no way that Alex Steen(while a fine player) is the best player in this deal.
This isn't even to mention that the Jets roster doesn't lack as much depth as it would seem. Scheifele is almost NHL ready, if he's not already. Even with out him our top nine dept looks like this...
Its really pretty decent depth, and we have no need to open a gaping hole by trading what looks to be a pretty outstanding goalscorer for two lesser players. After Scheifele makes the team, he'll slot into at least the second line at either the wing or centre(he's playing wing Huberdeau and RNH on the top line at WJC), that makes a guy like Wellwood obsolete, leaving very little in the way of weakness in our line up.
While I may have never seen Kaner score 40g, I don't think its too much of a reach to say that he will, when he reached the thirty goal plateau at 20 yrs old.
