Canada 2014 team

I'm actually interested in all the world junior talk as to who everyone thinks will get the call next year to play for team Canada.

Rielly and Reinhart should return on D if they arent in the NHL. I'll say Pouliot, Dumba, Ceci, Pulock, Pelech, and Finn will all be in the mix. Murray will be in the NHL. Nurse may be in the running as well

Drouin, Monahan, Hudon, Lazar, Shinkaruk, Wilson, Laughton, Kosmachuk, Leipsic, Athansiou, Lazar, Mantha, Domi and Rychel may all be in the running. I'm probably missing some forwards that will get strong consideration. The top 6 forwards wil rely on skilled players from the 13 draft because 2012 was so bad for Canadian forwards

Drouin - Monahan - Hudon
Athansiou - Shinkaruk - Domi
Kosmachuk - Lazar - Leipsic
Wilson - Laughton - Mantha
Rychel

Rielly Reinhart
Pelech Pouliot
Pulock Finn
Ceci

Dumba has to turn it around before I'll put him in there, absolutely brutal at the camp this year.

Goalies

Paterson
Fucale

Pateron is the only returnee and he had a lights out camp this year, Fucale is highly rated. Not sure who the third goalie will be

16 years old or not, I could see Connor McDavid on next years team. That will surely be a big story depending how he starts his OHL season.

Yep thts definitely someone I should have included. Theres a serious lack of skilled forwards and he fits the bill, he'll have to have a really strong start to the season though

I'd imagine the Leafs would want Rielly in the NHL next year.

Ceci and Murray are 93 born. Is Athansiou really that good?

Replace Ceci with Dumba then and the Canadian forwards corps isnt looking that great. I think Athanasiou's speed and point production will get him a spot possibly on the second line

Agreed. Its certainly within reason to believe he can lead the OHL in scoring next year.

I'd have to imagine Ekblad makes the team.

Rielly will be up with the Leafs most likely.

Ekblad would more than likely make the team.
_________
I doubt Athansiou makes the team. I would assume Rychel would play a bigger role than the 13th forward.
_________
And bring on the jokes/laughs but if Jankowski finishes his season strong, and starts the year off well he should be in the mix. 6'4 - 179lbs now... I could see him adding 8-10lbs before camp. Looked absolutely amazing at development camp this summer.
_________
I also think (from what I've read/seen) Monahan will make the NHL after the draft. I know that idea probably won't be shared, but I believe he's ready to make that transition.
_________

So assuming MacKinnon, Monahan, Rielly, & Reinhart are playing in the NHL
My top 9 & top 4 prediction:

Mantha - Drouin - Hudon (size and skill)
Rychel - Jank - Shinkaruk (decent size, some grit, lots of skill)
Wilson - Lazar - Duclair (lots of grit, size, physicality, and able to score)

Pulock - Ekblad
Ceci - Finn

I forgot about Ekblad I think he'll be there. Disagree on Athanasiou if he keeps putting up a tonne of offense with his speed. He doesnt even get PP time and hes producing quite a bit, I think he'll be there.

Canada needs skilled forwards and like it or not HC isnt going to take a bunch of young guys to the tournament

Here's a list of players I can think of that would be in the running for a summer development camp invite, which is the beginning of the selection process:

94's
-
C Andreas Athanasiou (Barrie, OHL)
LW William Carrier (Cape Breton, QMJHL)
C Brendan Gaunce (Belleville, OHL)
LW/C Charles Hudon (Chicoutimi, QMJHL)
C/LW Mark Jankowski (Providence College, HEA)
RW/C Alex Kerfoot (Coquitlam, BCHL)
RW Scott Kosmachuk (Oshawa, OHL)
C Scott Laughton (Oshawa, OHL)

C Sean Monahan (Ottawa, OHL)
RW Marc-Olivier Roy (Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL)
LW Kerby Rychel (Windsor, OHL)
C Hunter Shinkaruk (Medicine Hat, WHL)

C Mike Winther (Prince Albert, WHL)

D Mathew Dumba (Red Deer, WHL)
D Matt Finn (Guelph, OHL)

D Slater Koekkoek (Peterborough, OHL)
D Mike Matheson (Boston College, HEA)
D Adam Pelech (Erie, OHL)

D Ryan Pulock (Brandon, WHL)
D Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton, WHL)

G Chris Driedger (Calgary, WHL)

95's
-

D Madison Bowey (Kelowna, WHL)
D Darnell Nurse (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL)
D Samuel Morin (Rimouski, QMJHL)
D Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert, WHL)
D Matt Murphy (Val-d'Or, QMJHL)
D Jordan Subban (Belleville, OHL)
D Shea Theodore (Seattle, WHL)

G Eric Comrie (Tri-City, WHL)
G Zach Fucale (Halifax, QMJHL)
G Spencer Martin (Mississauga, OHL)

96's
-
C Michael Dal Colle (Oshawa, OHL)
C/RW Josh Ho-Sang (Windsor, OHL)

D Aaron Ekblad (Barrie, OHL)
D Roland McKeown (Kingston, OHL)

97's
-
C Connor McDavid (Erie, OHL)

Obviously they won't all be available come the tournament, given that some could be playing in the NHL, but I included them anyways.
As for the younger players (96's and 97's): I think all of them are deserving of a shot, regardless of age.
All four of the 96's look to be top ten picks in 2014 and everyone knows about McDavid.

I'm not hopeful that the lockout won't carry into next year yet

Rielly will be in the NHL though assuming no lockout

The lineup looks much better this year. However, it is understandable due to the current situation. I hope McDavid gets his shot next year.

I see a lot of people putting Ceci on their team, but he is a late 93 birthday and won't be eligible to play next year. I think he should have been invited to camp this year. He has better offensive numbers than most other d-man that are on the team and/or were at the selection camp, while playing on one of the weaker teams in the OHL this year.

That's how I see the camp. A lot can change and I'm sure there will be some different options.

Lines:

Drouin-Monohan-Shinkaruk
Jankowski-Hudon-Sissons
Kosmachuk-Laughton-Gaunce
Duclair-Leipsic-Wilson
Lazar/McDavid

If the first line is in the NHL replace with Domi, Carrier, or Mantha.

Dumba-Koekkoek
Finn-Pelech
Pulock-Morriessey
Pouliot

Paterson
Fucale
Comrie

I'm sure I'm very wrong, just looking for some discussion.

Unless Athanasiou has drastically improved in his own zone since his play last year for the Knights, there is no chance that Hockey Canada would even invite him to camp.

I haven't had a chance to see him this year so I honestly don't know. Maybe Barrie has changed him, but I somehow doubt it.

What about Connor Brown? As a Leafs fan, I have to say, I've been really impressed by him, he's not the greatest skater, but has high hockey IQ, great hands and gives it 100% every shift.

Yep I would add him to the mix. Forgot about Reinhart. I don't see Sam making the team however unless he really impresses next year.

Cody Ceci's too old, he's a '93. I also don't believe Athanasiou has any chance at making the team.. maybe he gets considered for an invite, but I doubt he even gets invited. Sam Reinhart should be on the team.

Ive only seen him once but I will say that Barrie fans absolutely love him so he cant be as bad as what he was in London. It really just seems like he either wasnt giving it his all in London or his confidence was completely shot.

Hes gotta have some of the best wheels in the CHL and has some pretty nasty hands plus this year hes putting up a decent amount over a point per game without much PP time at all. With the lack of skilled forwards, especially from his draft year I think heèll actually have a pretty good shot at the team. Knighs fans cant stand him and Barrie fans cant believe London let him get away beause hes been such a different player this year. I didnt even want the wings to draft him hoestly and now hes tearing up pretty good, Ièm changing my tune.

I guess I see him there because pretty much all the guys drafted from Canada in that year were grinder types, not high skill speedster types like Athanasiou.

I dont see Gaunce making it. Hes not really producing and there are better 2 way gritty players to play on the team
