Note to Dodger fans: Andre Ethier is worthless.

not sure why but mlb network is airing "oddest plays of 2012".

they brought up the red sox/orioles game where chris davis got the win. and they listed the date as "august 30" which isn't accurate.

that is pretty odd. it took me 15 seconds to find the right date online. the red sox were in anaheim on august 30.

Rays have officially signed Roberto Hernandez (formerly Fausto Carmona).

But if he can hit righthanders (which is the majority of the pitchers) like a hitter, I don't ****ing care.

He got 3.25 M.

Not sure I understand that signing considering TB's rotation depth and offensive needs.

Groundball specialist for their bullpen. They have had one consistently the last few seasons. Badenhop was that guy last year but was traded to the Brewers this season.

Could just be that the Rays think they can fix him and will DFA him if he can't.

Left handers accounted for 40% of his at bats last season. You should definitely care.

At the very least, Hernandez fills the hole that was left after Badenhop was traded. He can also eat some innings if needed, and his experience as a quality starting pitcher will likely come into play throughout the season, especially since Shields (the Rays' biggest workhorse) is gone.

I actually think Vernon Wells will be a solid platoon player. Phillies interested in trading for him, obviously Angels consume up all the salary.

So? That doesn't mean he has no value. He mashes righties. Money isn't exactly an object to the Dodgers, so they could eat some of his contract and trade him to a team where paying Ethier ~$10 million (just a random guess) is much more valuable to that team.

Not to mention teams are seeking out the Dodgers on Ethier, not the other way around. That pretty definitively states he has value.

No matter how hard they try to pretend like he will, he can’t hit lefty pitching and he’s never going to. But that shouldn’t obscure just how productive he is against righty pitching, where he’s one of the most dangerous bats in the game. Even last year, when he struggled for months at a time, he had the 7th highest wOBA against righties of any other player, better than Josh Hamilton or Giancarlo Stanton or Joe Mauer or Chase Headley. Over the last three years, he’s 9th; over the last five, he’s 7th. If you just stop forcing him to face lefties and keep him in only against righties, it’s not hard to imagine a .310/.360/.510 line, which is outstanding.

I remember when Indians traded 2nd greatest closer of all time Bob Wickman and made Carmona their closer. 4 losses, 3 blown saves and couple walk off HRs later and that was the end of that.

I think Ruben Amaro is just trying to collect all the worst contracts in baseball.

I'm still calling him Fausto Carmona. Every time I see Roberto Hernandez I think of the reliever who played for like 20 teams.

Andre Ethier minus the contract is significantly more valuable. Him as a total package, including his entire contract, is worthless.

The Ethier page on MLBTR got me irked. Ethier for Olt suggestions. Gah, that place used to be moderately well commented.

Not sure on this prospect, but maybe Mets are trying to catch some OF lightning in a bottle for cheap this year. Seeing how they've already punted 2013 ..
