Could World Championships be best on best?

Nationalism carries a very strong negative history with it. Americans are probably much more patriotic than most Europeans, if you will allow me to use the softer word of it. Americans are also very insular. They care first and foremost about their own national leagues in baseball, hockey, football, although not soccer. International tournaments are nice, but only the Olympics really generate any true sports nationalism.

Zero competitive games played over the season stopped quite many players, including Sakic, Iginla and Pronger. Those guys would have jumped out of the cold into top-level hockey had they participated in the 2005 WHC.

Same will happen this year. Those guys who actually play some regular season hockey in an European club are willing and able. Those who got sidelined due to insurance costs or other issues will not.

So no, 2013 WHC will hardly be best-on-best. We may see some better-than-average squads, but many big names will still be absent.

Couldn't you argue that exact situation existed at the summit series? You basically took a bunch of guys in their offseason who had barely played together and put then against guys that had been going full tilt for months.

Maybe. But if the best argument you have is from 40 years ago, I'd say it could still use a little better grounding.

Mine isn't a gut feeling either, but very much what happened in 2005. Those who got to play, took part in the WHC. Those who didn't, did not. And those who did regardless, were clearly out of step.
