I agree that a problem with Boyle has been his size. Because he's 6'7" 240 people expect him to put opponents in body bags. He generally doesn't. When he doesn't meet that expectation people look down on his game. It's caused him to become underrated in alot of cases.
But that doesn't mean he's not an effective physical player. He's still good for ~240 hits every year. Who cares how hard they are? They're understated and above all, effective, that's what matters. He's a good checker. You don't need to kill people to be one. He can also be effective as a bully as we saw with Karlsson in the playoffs. Being able to get smaller skills guys off their game is important.
But like you said he doesn't use that moose frame of his to annihilate people and sometimes even Rangers fans call him out because of that. But that's not his game and it doesn't need to be.
