Good thing they're wrong.

We were supposed to win the 2011 WS against the Phillies!!!

We absolutely still have a chance.

^pretty much. We were consensus champs the year we collapsed.

I can't believe so many have the Yankees winning. I think there is a chance we can see them fall off this year. Shaky at 3B and SS (Jeter coming off of his broken ankle), Teixeira has not hit higher than .260 in 3 years and seems to be on the decline, the outfielders all carry question marks (Ichiro is a billion, Granderson hit .230, Gardner is coming off a mostly missed season) they have rotation issues (Sabathia might finally be starting to wear down, Kuroda's a mythical age, the rest are question marks) and bullpen problems (Soriano is gone, Robertson can't close, Rivera is a question mark coming off of his injury).

I wouldn't be optimistic. I think the Blue Jays are 1 and the Rays (they have pitching for days still) are 2. And then it is pretty much a toss up, with the Yankees, O's, and Sox battling it out for 3rd. I honestly think the O's are going to regress big time. There is no way they will win all of those 1 run games with that mediocre at best pitching staff.

Granted, I would still put the Spanks at 3 over the Sox, I just wouldn't be surprised if the gap is a lot closer than it seems to be.

Just because I'm bored, what would you guys say if you heard the Red Sox were kicking the tires on Johan Santana? We're on a longshot of a year anyway, and there'd definitely be some upside there.

The money is beyond absurd, with the buyout it's basically a 1 year deal for $30M unless he pitches like a rockstar -- but if he does, you probably make the playoffs. You want big money short term deals on high upside players? Well there's one.

I can see several good reasons to stay away, but I can't help but be at least a little intrigued at the possibility too.

You must not have been here for the Johan discussion. It received negative feedback, from myself included

At this point, his arm is held together by rubber bands and super glue. He put up numbers that I would put up in his last 10 starts, which were spaced over a few months. Eventually the Mets just said **** it, you're not pitching anymore.

If his arm health wasn't an issue, I'd be more inclined to think about it. But the reality is, he is not Johan Santana anymore.

Johan Santana has put up one of the best 3 year stretches of the past decades.

Not sure I'd do it anymore, his upside is probably in the 3-4 WAR range. We'd take it, but the risk is just out of the roof. Makes more sense to gamble on someone like Cliff Lee, pretty exensive due to a backloaded contract, but when right, he'll give you 6-7 WAR baseball.

@poll: of course it doesn't mean that those will be the end results in October 2013, but it's a trend and I don't see how anyone can disagree with it. Of course everything has to do with a little bit luck, injuries and some other unpredictable factors, but on paper, Toronto is the new team to beat. Then theres a 2 team race between Tampa and NYY, after that comes Baltimore and the Sox.

I think if they are relativity healthy, Red Sox can sneak into a WC spot. Hopefully.

TSH is reporting on their newsflash that the Sox have "reopened negotiations with Napoli". WTF does that mean?

^ Watch him want more money or something.

The Sox probably want a medical clause in the deal and perhaps Nappy isn't feeling it.

I wonder how disappointed Twins fans are about that deal.

They had to deal the top pitcher in the league. Three offers. One was Lester or Ellsbury, justin masrerson, and jed lowrie, one was phil hughes, melky cabrera, and alan horne, and the last was essentially Carlos Gomez.

They ended up with Gomez.

Supposedly it's a hip issue, and they're trying to knock it down to a 2 year deal instead of a 3 year one? Hilarious.

That's the first thought I had too. Like, do you really believe it when they say you have an issue? I mean, look at their track record. I'd be tempted to assume the exact opposite of what their findings were, given that...

Easier said than done. KC will not trade Hosmer now that they traded Myers

They do still have Billy Butler. So it's a remote possibility. I don't think they would have traded him even if they kept Myers though.

The Mariners were supposedly looking hard at Butler a couple weeks ago. The price was probably Hultzen/Walker +

They are actually a very good fit in terms of trade partners.

Angels just traded Kendrys Morales to the Mariners for lefty Jason Vargas. That takes him off the market for the Sox. Would have been a nice fit here, surprised the Angels couldn't get a little more for him.

Gives the Angels a needed innings eater

Gives the Mariners a bat they have been looking for all offseason.

Pretty even swap

I feel like Morales is more valuable than Vargas, but I guess the Angels had too many guys/not enough at-bats, so I guess they got a piece that might help, but I envisioned a bigger return for Morales.

Sox and Pirates talking Hanrahan. I'd love to see Hanrahan here to close.
