Glad to see him do well lately.

Hopefully a 20+ goal season from him by season's end. It would be a great rookie season for him

he's now at 8 pts (6g & 2a) in 30 games. anyone who's seen him have insight? i know the transition to jr. hockey is hard...but the #s are surprising for whl bantam #1, no? ...and he has decent size...so it's not just a case of a small guy who could dominate as a 14 yr old, etc.

He is playing on a very good team with a lot of older players. He is only getting 4th line minutes right now. You can see flashes of how good he is at times. I think next year he will get a much bigger role and play in the top 6, his numbers will go up.

I think he's been playing with Cody and Greg Chase the last 2 games and got 2 points

Short time period but I think he'll see constant top 6 ice time from now

It looked to me like he was on the fourth line, or third line for the bulk of the season, up until and including the last game before the break.

He seems to be struggling offensively, but he has very good tools/intangibles. I think next season will be his coming out party.

I can confirm he was on the fourth line most of the year but the game I saw last week he was on second and now that he's been bumped up is producing

had a good showing at u17. on the team itself, i thought martin (who's D) had the best showing - but Virtanen was easily the best forward on the team by a long shot and i thought had a good tournament. hopefully this was a chance for him to get his confidence up a bit.

slow start to the year but really turned it on the 2nd half. Almost 20 goals in his rookie year while +23

The thread title needs to be updated lol. He's not even close to being 2013 eligible. Add three more weeks and he's almost 2015 eligible.

Consistency is the big thing for him. I watched Calgary some nights and didn't see him once. Other nights he was the most dominant player on the ice, bar none. The kid has top, top end talent when he wants to have it.

Playing more minutes and doing things with them. On the top line with Rask and Macek. More PP time as well. As Renegade said: consistency has been his thing. Starting to bring it shift in and shift out and now the numbers are coming.

Always a good sign for players that age. For him to develop, that mentality is key. Shift in, shift out.

I'm confused, is he a Left Wing or Right Wing ? cause on the WHL site it says he's a Left Wing.

I'm a Hitmen season ticket holder and Virtanen has had a very good first year. He has elite shooting skill, very good vision and skating, and physical strength. The kid engages physically and wins puck battles consistently against older talent.

Virtanen has been managed smartly by the coaching staff playing support minutes on a strong, veteran team. His numbers are very good and his game mature for a Dub rookie. His peer age tournament numbers at the U17 very strong.

High end prospect with a very good 16 year old season.

he will be a very high pick in 2014.. HUGE offensive potential and plays with an edge. I think next season he will have a 75+ point total and 100+ PIM total

Is that "HUGE" offensive potential? I think he's a good all around player, I've seen him play 4 times live, but I don't think he flashes elite offensive ability necessarily. He's a great worker with good skills though, a player that winning teams have.

as a 17 year old id say 75+ points is pretty damn good. I think he will get even more than that as an 18 and 19 year old definately. So yes, I think he has HUGE offensive potential

That's pretty good but maybe we have different definitions.

anyone want to provide an end of season post-mortem on his performance. i know his opportunities were impacted by the fact his team was competitive (i.e. he wasn't the 1c on a garbage re-build team).

from the little i saw of him personally i was impressed.

it looks like he's a lock for hlinka this summer?

i've read a few early reports that he projects to be top 10 next year...for the people who've actually seen him play a lot - does that sound plausible?

Could definitely be a top 10 player by the end of next year. He has all the tools. He's a good skater, has a great shot, can be physical, is tough to play against. He does a bit of everything. Like I've said above, he just needs to work on being more consistent and working every shift of every game. If he does that, he could have top 10 potential no doubt.

I'd say he's the most physical of the skilled WHL forwards I've seen in a long time.

He'll still only be 17 at the draft, he's going to beast next year. You can already see how being on a veteran team aided his two way play.

He was a 16 year old who played PP and PK, he is already hard to stop entering the offensize zone at 16. He's only going to pack on mass and strength this summer.

The sky is definitely the limit. I forecast 35 goals and 75 points and probably 90 PIM's.

He's gotta be a top 10 at this point. He's my favourite prospect for 2014 (Draisatl is not far behind though...and he's probably ahead in quite a few rankings).

Was selected by Zagreb in the KHL Junior Draft. Which is a bit off as I don't see why he'd go to the KHL when he's only 16/17 and still got some developing to do.
