The players are fighting not just for now, but for the future. They also want to break the cycle of lockouts. And they are galvanized by Bettman. Right, wrong or indifferent. If this season is canceled, as many as 5 franchises could be in trouble. And they are mostly the creations of Bettman's expansion. Explain to me how it makes sense whatsoever for the owners to continue down this path?

Point being is that neither side makes any sense at all.
Thats the biggest bunch of baloney going -- the notion that this is some sort of crusade by the PA for the future betterment of the game and the player's association. If that were the case, Fehr would've been pounding on Bettman's door the day he officially become Executive Director, not waiting to negotiate until late summer.

It makes perfect sense, for both side -- its one big money grab. And its our money.

I don't think that's true. Getting everyone together, signing unsigned players and holding some kind of training camp seems like it would require at least 10 days. Throw in the holidays and it's realistically 2 weeks.

The question is, what is the drop dead date for an agreement that would allow games to start on 1/15? Maybe 1/4 or 1/5?

Someone yesterday said a resolution by New Years Eve is a hopeful scenario.

3-4 days for the players to return. 8-10 training camp. That would put us around Jan. 14th.

Im with you. I dont think its realistic to get everything together in a week. Theres going to be at least another few days to get everyone together, get contracts signed, and get some sort of training camp completed - which, by the way, will be completely inept and lead to a lot of injuries.

Trying to pin down either side is impossible. The NHL wants to be up and running by the 15th. Is that really a firm date? If the PA disclaims interest and files lawsuits and then a deal is made,it will take time to get the PA back together to ratify the deal. They have until 1/2 to disclaim. Will they wait to disclaim? They don't have much time. The NBA took about a month to get a deal, have the union re-form,open up camps, play 2 preseason games and play games. Today is December 21. Jan. 15 is less than 4 weeks away. John Shannon tweeted about the disclaimer and the vote which ends in 45 minutes. 12 noon. From: @JSportsnet
Sent: Dec 21, 2012 8:38a

That doesn't mean the Union disappears today. This is just a single step to give the Union Executive another option in the weeks to come.

The NBA disclaimed on a Monday and then 12 days later on Black Friday they had a deal. It was almost 6 weeks from the time they disclaimed interest to playing on Christmas day. The NHL doesn't have 6 weeks.

Let's be realistic, if they aren't playing by Jan. 15 there is no season. Jan 15 - April 15 is basically 90 days...you can't play more than every other night, and even that's pushing it...so figure 40 games. Unless they are going to extend the regular season to May, there's just no way to do more than 40 or so games if they don't drop the puck by Jan 15. That's pretty much the drop dead date, regardless of whether they call it as such. The clock is ticking...less than 25 days left to get a deal done, get the players back, have a quick camp...or it's over.

My totally uninformed timeline?

Just after Christmas the PA and league announce they're getting back to negotiating. Some marathon sessions lead to an agreement right around New Year's Day. The league and the PA pat themselves on the back for getting a deal done and saving the season (this part will be absolutely disgusting).

A 72 hour window is given to sign UFA and RFA, and allow for travel for all players. A one week training camp kicks off the first week in January. Season starts by 1/15.

Looks real. Season will start 1/16, iMO. No check for players on 1/15.

NHLPA vote passes overwhelmingly in favor of enabling Disclaimer of Interest.

Yes, but let's hope they get an agreement done before then so they don't have to resort to disclaiming interest.

Can someone please explain what exactly the union disbanding/disclaiming interest would do? I'm perplexed by all of this.

The NHL would be legally prohibited from locking out the players if they were no longer represented by the NHLPA. The individual players, if the PA disbanded, would then be free to pursue legal action against the NHL, including alleged antitrust violations.

Alright I hope this is just a scare tactic to gain leverage in negotiations. The result of all this sounds like to much hassle.

I think if you do it, you gotta be ready to follow through. It's like drawing a gun on someone, you might not want to use it but you better damn well be prepared to (says the guy who doesn't own a gun)

Unfortunately the whole thing has disintegrated into petty stubbornness at this point, I think. Then again, maybe that's what it was since the beginning. I really think both sides might be ready to blow the entire thing up rather than budge on the last few steps, because of their "principles".

So...I don't think either side really wants to go the route of law suits and all of that, but they might be ready to do it anyways, out of spite.

As a side note, I wonder if the NHLPA requesting moderators multiple times wasn't a play to help show that they have been negotiating in good faith

Well, I've just about given up on this season. That they haven't been able to get a new CBA after nearly 100 days is just shameful. As much as it sucks that we're looking at no Rangers hockey for another 9 months, at least we'll know for sure in the next two weeks.
