I agree but he still played a vital role in a friendly today versus Team Canada (arguably the favored team to win the tournament).

He did have an excellent game, though its hard to judge cause Canada played like utter crap. Canada was playing like a bunch of individuals. Maatta played in all situations and had a nice assist on a PP goal.

Reading the comparisons to Timonen, Hamrlik, etc. In regards to his defensive game...

I agree with the Timonen comparisons. I would even compare him to Markov. I'm not sure he'll put him similar numbers, but he plays that same type of game. To me, he doesn't assert himself physically enough to warrant a Hamrlik label.

I think Timonen is one of the most overrated players in the NHL the past 10 years.

I don't think he's very good. He's always been underwhelming offensively, especially in Philly, and really average defensively. Specifically on our team, Tyler Kennedy and Chris Kunitz have abused the guy, and we're not talking about some highly skilled studs.

People have always tried putting him in that "#1 defenseman" category, and I don't even think he's close. He's a good defenseman, but in no way, shape, or form a hard one to play against.

And when regarding Maatta to Timonen, I don't think that's a straight comparison. Maatta is about 4-5 inches bigger, and 25-30 lbs heavier. I also think Maatta plays a little rougher than Timonen. I wouldn't have a problem if Maatta produced similar amounts of points.

If someone calls him a Nr. 1 dman, then yes, that's just wrong. I think he's a good player though, but as you said, not really tough to play against. He used to be a very solid number two guy (with his strenght being offense), but not anymore. He was also much better in Nashville.

It was only a pre-tournament game, and Canada played pretty lousy, but I thought Maatta was really impressive yesterday in all aspects of the game. Best defenseman for Finland yesterday, for sure.

I don't know how much things will change when Finland has their final roster on the ice, but I also liked the fact that Maatta was used in all situations, pretty much as their #1 defenseman. It'll give us a chance to see how he fares against the best competition in the world for his age group.

I'm excited about this pick.

Totally agree, this tournament will be a huge test for him. Lots of hockey he has played in the last year including the Memorial Cup. Can't be bad for his development

Supposedly the Finnish coach has said that Maatta is on the top defensive pairing. I read that in the Finnish WJC thread. I cannot remember which poster it was.

A Finish guy said he was talking to a scout last night was said that Maata "will" play in the NHL next season.

I think Maatta will be an NHL'er. Where he will slot in is yet to be seen. I think his low-range projection is a guy who is a little better than Brian Strait, which still represents an NHL'er, IMO.

Do you mean next year or in general? I think he'll definitely be a top-4 guy in a few years.

I think he looks like a real solid number 3 guy that can play both special teams.

Maybe if hes traded We have too much of a logjam on defense for him to crack our roster anytime soon. Not saying i dont litke him as a prospect, we just have too many defensemen in front of him.

On the Pens? Good one

Not with Martin, Orpik and Niskanen on the roster. Trade 1 of those to make a spot for him. Not a chance

Hey maybe he was talking to Shero and didn't know it lol. Although I agree he may be ABLE to play NHL hockey next season, that doesn't mean he WILL be playing NHL hockey next season.

Isn't Maatta allowed to go back to Jr next season?

Not just allowed, but has to. It's either NHL or back to juniors with him.
